My friend Krystal and I showed up to SBC around 5.30 or so. I was worried about the wait (after remembering the line for Stubbs back in May,) but really, this was the easiest I've ever gotten into a show. Plus, she's not a huge fan, so I didn't want her to get bored and leave.
DFA79
So DFA came on around 7.30 and no one really cared. We were on the left side of the stage about 20 feet back. I really dig the album and was excited to hear them live. They've got an interesting setup, considering it's just the two guys and all. I just wish the crowd would have
moved a little. I was bouncing around, and I could see one guy really rocking out further up towards the stage, but everyone around us just stood there.
Queens of the Stone Age
QotSA came on around 8.30 or so. I like Rated R and Songs For the Deaf, but I didn't like Lullabies to Paralyze at all. Nonetheless, I've heard they're great live, so I was pretty excited to hear them. We'd moved up towards the right hand side of the stage by now, and we were edging our way closer to the barricade. So Queens come on, and they had a spooky tree tarp background and lots of solid lights. I didn't really recognize any songs other than Monsters in the Parasol, No One Knows, and Little Sister. A pit broke out right next to us, so these guys let us stand in front of them and kept the two of us from being smashed to death. And good god, Josh Homme
is Elvis. Creepy.
The only downside was the fact that we were right next to these two teenaged girls (in vinyl corset-y things) who kept giving the band the finger and screaming out "You pussies!" and "Trent! Trent Reznor! Where's Trent?!" The short one sounded like a cat in a blender on high, and her voice kept cracking. The pudgy one just wouldn't put her fucking hand down and shut the hell up. Christ, you two really ruined what should have been a good set. I hope you both got trampled when everyone went apeshit during NIN.
(On a lighter note: hello to the two girls in front of us wearing black With Teeth shirts, and hi to Casey & Casey's friend, who saved us from being moshed to death.)
Nine Inch Nails
NIN came out around 10. Standouts for me were March of the Pigs, Gave Up, Eraser/Right Where It Belongs/Beside You In Time, Sin, Head Like a Hole.
With regards to the set list: for as much as I don't really care for With Teeth as an album, the songs really do work well live. The Line Begins to Blur, The Hand That Feeds and Love Is Not Enough, especially. I'm still holding out for Sunspots. Next time around, maybe?
The light setup was incredible. I thought the panels during the club tour were pretty good, but wow. These were layered and everything.
We did, however, have a really bad case of "That Guy." "That Guy," who I'll call Douchebag McJerkenstein for short, sang
every song very loudly and very off key and very in my ear for most of the show. Thanks, sir. I know I paid good money to hear your mangled, tone-deaf versions of Closer and Burn as opposed to the band's.
So, yeah. Aaron ran around and broke things and knocked mic stands over. Near the end, he was lying upside down on one of the amps, then climbed over to the side of the stage and beat up his guitar.
Alex was really good. After hearing initial reports, I was a little worried, but he was really
on. Go, new guy!
Trent ran around and knocked things over and was really energetic. Good times.
All in all, it was awesome. I stayed in the pit the whole time this round, as opposed to Austin when I got the hell out after three songs. Less jumping and beating the shit out of people, and more swaying and shoving. Hearing everyone scream along with Head Like a Hole for the closer was brilliant. And being that close up when Eraser/RWIB/BYIT were played: WOW, for serious.
Adzukientropy, we were probably about 5 feet to your left. Hee! The meetup sounds like it was a blast, I wish I'd gone now.
Many thanks to the NIN camp for finally coming to San Antonio.

I'd probably pay to join the Spiral if I could see Aaron in a chicken suit.
