Wow.
My first NIN show ever--I've been a fan since about '98, and I desperately wanted to catch one of the Fragility shows. But since I was about 13 then, and the only way I was going to see it was to be in the back with my mother...eh, I passed.
Anyway, my little sister and I had floor tickets, and we were in line since about 2 PM. (It was going to be 10 AM, but the little one is hypoglycemic, and needed food. What a brat.) The 4 and a half hour wait wasn't so bad, and it sure as hell payed off. We ended up in the second row, about 10 feet to stage left (our left, the band's right).
First of all I want to really thank everyone right around us--Brandy in front, I believe her name was, the guy to her left, the two guys and two girls right behind us/around us, and the girl and her boyfriend beside my little sister. (She was wearing a red shirt with a spider on it, a skirt, and tights, with her hair back--I was wearing a Clash shirt and jeans, but if you were right by us, you know who you are.)
These people made the night a million times better.
Death from Above 1979 was really great. My sister has been listening to them for a while, and was already a fan. Now I am too. For only having bass, drums, and synth, they make a hell of a lot of noise. Whoever was smoking pot around us though is a fucking idiot.
I've been a big fan of QOTSA for a couple years, and they didn't disappoint. (I personally find the lead singer's Craig Kilborn/Elvis vibe pretty sexy. ^_^) But halfway through their set, these two stoned psuedo-lesbians come barrelling through the crowd, trying to get to the front. They weasel their way in front of the two couples behind us, and start trying to slip between me and my sister. I dug my elbow into her bony hip, and she puts her arm around my neck and starts rubbing my ear, and leans over and asked my name. I told her it was Amy, and she could fuck off. So then she starts fucking MOLESTING my 14-year old sister. Grabbing her ass, blowing on her ear, feeling her boobs, and alternately trying to get between her and the guy next to her. At one point, I guess they realized that Sarah was probably not going to move, so this bitch just tries to cram her ass right in the tiny space. Sarah gets toppled over onto me, and looks at this bitch and yells, "There is NOWHERE for me to go!" That's when the girl next to Sarah looks over and links arms with her, Sarah links arms with me, I link arms with the girl next to me--we formed a chain, blocked the cunts out, and enjoyed the last song in peace. Well, mostly, anyway. The two bitches were still trying to weasel in somewhere, but now there was absolutely no way they would get there.
So the lights come up, and there's a bit of arguing. One of the girls behind me leans up and says "They are trying to get in front of you--WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T LET THEM." The girl I'd linked arms with was had come with her, so we all start bitching about how we had waited for four and a half hours and if they thought we were going to give up our spots so easy, they were fucking idiots.
Then we found out who was smoking. I turn around at the smell, and they have a joint out, lit up. The security guard (who is five feet from them) see it, looks at her, and tells her "There's no smoking in here, put it out," or something to that effect, and steps back. The dumb bitch doesn't do it. I call him over again, and say, "She is smoking WEED. Are you going to actually do anything about it?" He says "mumblemumble..you know."
The girl behind me and I ask if he can throw her out. More mumbling.
And they're still smoking.
The girl behind me says that if she weren't afraid of losing her spot, she'd call the JSO.
But it all worked out. I guess they smoked enough pot, because they didn't bother anyone for the rest of the concert.
Meanwhile, I'm dying from anticipation, watching them set up behind that curtain. When I finally heard Pinion start, I thought I was about to have a stroke...when I saw Trent for the first time, I screamed bloody murder. Obsessed fangirl? Maybe.
The set was amazing, everything sounded great. I was completely blown away, almost on the verge of tears at some points. Alex Carapetis did a hell of a job--he sounded like he'd been playing with them for years.
My spot could not have been more perfect. I could see everything the whole time. I couldn't take my eyes off of the stage for most of the concert.
All in all, it was absolutely perfect. I was as close as I could have been, the floor was rough but not violent, and like I said, the people around us made it even better.
They had better come back to Jax for the next tour! But after that, I think I would drive any distance to see them again.
