Whew! Just got back...let's see:

I have no idea what the exact set list is but I'm so happy that we got:

Dead Souls
Reptile
SICNH
Burn
Home

I missed them all at Hammerstein so hearing them here was great.

I got there at 5:30 and met up with the NINFR messageboard people (thanks you guys for making me feel welcome :) ) and ended up hanging with a guy who's name I don't know, and who spoke English as badly as I speak French (envoie moi les photos svp, n'oublie pas!) I was really happy that I managed to smuggle my camcorder in. It was my first time bootlegging, if the footage didnt come out like crap I'll post it somewhere.
Dresden Dolls were good as usual, they didn't play Girl Anachronism, after Half Jack, someone came and whispered to Amanda and I guess for some reason they had to cut it short.
The venue was a freaking furnace, I was sweating even before NIN came on. I kept thinking how it must suck to be a goth in summer time. Throughout the concert I was looking at the pit, and it was really tame but I know that that was because of the insane heat. At one point Trent was like 'So you guys haven't heard about air conditioning here or what, Christ.' and Amanda commented on it too. Also, I was extremely pissed that SICNH got screwed up. Trent shared my sentiments because he proceeded to bash his microphone stand, which was alot of fun to watch, and then tongue lash the techs, poor guys.
And now for the music: I never realised TDTWWWA could rock so much, the live version is just so much better than the album version for me. I don't really like the song as far as NIN songs go, but that might have been the highlight of the night for me. Aaron was a maniac as usual, but I think he was really frisky tonight, he was running all over the place and at the end he trashed his guitar. Jerome was alot more animated tonight than when I saw him at Hammerstein. I really liked the Frail as well, it was really delicately done. In general, I thought that the sound quality was really good. Trent's vocals were amazing, can anyone remember for which song he sang one line in falsetto? It was unexpected and really cool.
Also the lighting For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. I didn't appreciate the lighting in Hammerstein cause I was too close and also fighting for my life most of the time, but being far from the stage this time I could really see it properly. That song in which there was just the blue and red, flashing one after the other, it was really trippy and cool, and the back drops were insane, I really loved the flames for Burn. (EDITED OUT). All in all, awsome show. Better than Hammerstein for me but that's this time I actually remember stuff. Yeah I know this is all over the place, I really need sleep, A demain

What a concert ! For me it was very physical. I stayed pretty close to the stage and it was quite tough : The temperature was fucking high ( something like 40° without including the mouvement and the contact with others warmth ). The highlights songs for me were:
Hurt, you know what you are, the hand that feeds, terrible lie and dead souls.

Trent didn't really talk to audience much ( I really regret that) and they cut the concert short after head like a hole ( no encore songs ).

I'm glad that Trent said something about the venue air-ventilation system "don't you guys fucking know air-conditioning" ... hehe, I guess they weren't. Trent was sweating hard, it was very physical for him too.

I saw a lot of people with cameras ( one guy took an awesome blue tainted picture of Trent at the beginning of The Wretched ), so we should expect a lot pictures of the show. I'd love to see an audience bootleg around someday.

A very intense concert: like a journey in hell ( 40°c all the time ).

The Dresden Dolls --> M A G N I F I Q U E 9/10

Enfin c'est pas méchant, mais on a quand manqué Something I can never have. Du coup on a eu something i can never play. C'était moins bien, forcément. The Hands that feeds donne bien en live, et pas mal des nouvelles chansons aussi.

Pinion
Wish
Sin
March of the pigs
Something i can never play
The hand that feeds
Terrible Lie
Closer + the only time = super moment
Burn

Bloody Frenchmen: they refuse to speak English.........

Just got home after a 3 hour drive (with my three friends).

I'm happy I saw a 110 min. show (after Mexico-Finland, Paris too) and not the usual 90 min. show.

What happened during 'something i can never have'?: I don't know. It looked like a technical problem, but I think it was a mental problem (troubles in the band or a bad day for Trent or voice-problems).
When they started after a few minutes, there was a strange atmosphere in the air. There was something wrong.

Overall a great show.
Lost some weight by the heat. It was like a boilingroom! Not normal.

PS: again, TLBTB was terrible!

On we go to Rockin'Park next sunday.

Hello so u meet someone from Ninfr ? I guess it's my pal: Trm as he mentioned you were video-taping. Tall, dressed in black short hairs glasses.

For the photos i took a lot as I was the tallest guy from ninfr (in white black long hairs, almost in front of Jordie) We just need to wait for the cam owner to go home. I managed too to shoot outside venue, and some audience, and of course the ninfr crew about 20 or 30 guys/girls.

Apparently i took great pics but i used lot digital zoom so i'm afraid for the quality. Other guys than trent were very hard to shoot my cam didnt like the huge lights.

I also bought 65euros of posters and stickers, there were a paris litograph.

You all forgot to mention that trent sang something like "plz someone plug my guitar". Aaron actually gone to the very right of the stage to crash his guitar, at the end of the show, and then offering it to audience. He also gave his mic, trent too with no result. He also gave it like usual another time to someone who couldnt sing :) that was awfull.

And finally to clear it up: Sicnh, trent stopped the song after crashing his mic and apparently the back voice thing. He mentionned something like the crew to do their job. There were also songs with no lyrics at start.

I agree for the huge heat, i finally decided to go in the middle of the thing because pinion+wish that was too cool to start. I couldnt handle all the show, hopefully i bought another shirt.

The ninfr crew also took a nin guitar pick.

ps: of course i will create a french page with pics

J'attend vos photos!

To the person who wanted to hear about Dresden dolls: I was busy emptying my bank acc at the merch booth for the first couple songs but they played:

Coing Operated Boy
Half Jack
War Pigs: And they said it was a love letter to the fans overseas and a f--k you to Bush, and of course everyone in the audience screamed.
Port of Amsterdam
Cover of No one knows by QOTSA

and I can't remember what else

During Half Jack they brought out this girl who was dressed in shear white, and performed some sort of mime thing during the performance. It kind of annoyed me but whatever. Brian said thanks to Trent and Amanda thanked the crew, and because it was their last time with NIN on the tour, she said she would hand over to QOTSA by way of the cover.

I also thought Trent was fairly chatty. He asked how we were doing. I think he was concerned about the heat. About SICNH, I think the mic wasn't working and that was why he got pissed, he said something like "hold on, while our crew gets their sh-t together" and then he said something along the lines of "maybe we can do this one right" and just played whichever song came after

And one last thing: I was at Hammerstein and I thought that those fans who were decked out in all their goth glory were fierce but they had nothing on the NIN fans here. These guys are hard core. Everyone was in regulation black and the majority I would say had a NIN t shirt on.
Hi everybody,

Just a few words in English about this show.

As expected, the Dresden Dolls show was very nice. As it was their last show as NIN support act, they wanted to do something special, so they talked a lot to the audience, they thanked warmly Trent Reznor, NIN and crew, they played a few songs of their album (including Good Day, Half Jack...) and 3 cover songs :
- War Pigs (originally by Black Sabbath, excellent cover, "dedicated" to George W. Bush)
- Amsterdam (originally by Jacques Brel, sung in French, contrary to David Bowie's version, very nice anyway)
- No One Knows (originally by The Queens Of The Stone Age, who'll be the next tour opener for NIN, unfortunately half of the cover sounded ugly, the piano was not matching the voice).
Unfortunately they couldn't play the last song (which may have been Girl Anachronism) for schedule reasons.

It's very difficult for me to write a complete review of the NIN show. Before this show, I saw them once during the Fragility Tour (November 1999, same location). In 1999, the arena was 4/5 full, this time it was overcrowded. Unfortunately the A/C failure made this show very hard to support so a big part of the audience remained very passive. The sound was absolutely great, I haven't listen to such a good sound in this place since a David Bowie show in 2002. It was loud (but not too much) and very clear. The sound of Reznor voice on Hurt for instance was just tremendous. The setlist was great, it was a big surprise to hear songs such as Reptile and Dead Souls. I was very desappointed when Trent stopped singing Something I Can Never Have because the first verses were so beautiful, it could have been superb. Trent didn't say anything during the show (and especially nothing during Starfuckers, Inc.), except something about the A/C.

In conclusion, it was very nice to see Trent and the new NIN again after a few years. The show was good but definitely not perfect (heat, Something I Can Never Have, no talking to the audience...). My girlfriend didn't know anything about this band (except some March of the pigs live footage from Closure video), so she discovered them during this show, and it has been a nice surprise for her. I'm looking forward to seeing them again during summer festivals, for it may be something very special in open air.

See you guys.

How much were the lithos and the other merch in Paris, BTW? (gotta get some money ready for next week...)
Master of the Ninth Arch
Litho was 15, t shirts were around 30-40, sweat shirts around 50-60, buttons, were like 10 for a pk of 10, 2 for just 1 button (patches were about the same), all prices in euros

Not a great show but surely not a bad show.
Really TOO overcrowed and f****** warm.

Looks like on SICNH he get really pissed off..
From where I was (near the PA at the left if you are in front of the stage), It looks like he destroyed a stob or something like that. The sound was really crap at the begining: amplitude in Wish by example, the bass on TLBTB, guitare too high in closer (i couldn't hear the synth as it supposed to be), etc..
Maybe were my expectation too great since I saw them in 99/00 (Tilburg, Werchter etc).

But finally I think that the heavy heat did not arrange the things. For anybody.

Let's wait for werchter in 1 week
Master of the Ninth Arch
Maybe you were too close to the stage, cause from where I was the sound was incredible.
I was actually at the pit, about 5 rows in, but then I changed my mind before Dresden dolls came, cause I wanted a good view of the stage and I'm so glad I did.
I was drenched in sweat at the end, and I was so far back, people were actually sitting. In the pit, it must have been like an inferno.
I was near the mixing desk.

technical problem on Something I Can Never Have? yes, quite:
trent's mic was duck-taped onto the floor of the stage, and a spotlight was directed right in his face :o
he went berzerk, destroyed the mic and the spotlight, stopped the song and said: "we'll be back in a minute, just the time for the crew to get their shit alltogether"
then they got back onstage with a strange feeling floating and sang the next song (they didn't restarted SICNH) as brutally as hell :D

I just wanna ask: do some people took pics of the show last night?

Hey, here's what I remember: Tees from 25€(usual t-shirt with graphs) to 35€(tank - female), badges 2€/pc, posters 15€...
It was a very good concert despite the excessive warmth and the technical problems as mentionned above (weird saturating sound on some tracks, the mic during SICNH...). What disturbed me the most is that we were used to get projections and screens behind the stage (like during the TDS and TF tours) and this time is was only light shows, quite poor in fact. That's too bad because I have always consider NIN as a mix of audio and video/graphics and using the WT graphics in the website could have led to great scenology. So Trent is back to the basics : the most violent songs (or if needed redone with a sound more rock like TDTWWWA that was damned good and all the PHM tracks), no break but all the concert in a row, no talking with the audience, no encore at the end, roughly Trent's "punch in your face".
Nice ambience in the arena : mix of gothics, skaters, a few punks, and hard core NIN fans (everybody was wearing black t-shirts or black cloths).
Not my prefered performance on NIN (the fragility tour in the same venue, Le Zenith, was outstanding, but a good punchy NIN.
Bloody Englishmen: they refuse to read French.........
HI all

about the prob during sicnh, i heard from s.o. near the stage that it was due to some light that was too high (allmost in his eyes), and that he tried to fix it his own way... got fucking scared to see the show ending so soon.

DD were amazing, some great energy and a real communication with the audience, with a extraodinary cover of "le port d'amsterdam".

As for the NIN show, not so crazy as it was during Fragility, but feels fucking great to see Trent back, and the opportunity to really hear the songs, va feeling them in 1999. Quite a strange experience considering NIN's music, but interesting anyway.

So if you read the above reviews, you know all about the heat, the setlist, the amazing dresden dolls (yes they did war pigs and yes it rocked out), the light show, a destructive Trent and all the other things...

My take on the whole evening is sort of ambiguous - after the show I felt completely drained and so satisfactorily empty, I hadn't felt that good after a show since I'd seen Tool for the first time or perhaps the last time I saw NIN in Tilburg in 99. I loved the fact that they completely rocked Reptile and Dead Souls was a welcome surprise, but all through the show I had the feeling that it was not a band I was seeing. It was rather Trent with his 4 kids, who played their part, yes, but not with much verve. Trent was visibly annoyed at times and he seemed a bit lonely out there. Far more than 5/6 years ago with the 'Fragility' band - just check 'And all that could have been' for evidence. The guitar player (his name has slipped my mind) is friggin awesome - he twists and pushes his guitar around and plays his strings more like a puppet master than a musician. Phenomenal, at times. I have seen Jeordie White before (Marilyn Manson, APC) and I must say that I thought he was having far more fun at with APC than yesterday (especially in his contact with James Iha). I got the feeling that the other guys still had not really learned how to deal with Trent as a frontman - especially during the 'Something I can never have' explosion.

It was clear that the band was going for the more straightforward and stripped-down rock approach than the rich and layered 'Fragility' tour. At times it worked - it was a tenacious and relentless assault on the senses, the only relief of which ('Something I can never have') was brutally cut short, and that's Nine Inch Nails at its best. At times it fell a bit flat - the With Teeth songs just didn't cut it like Reptile, Closer, (live-favorite) Burn, Wish, The Wretched, March of the Pigs... Somehow I really missed the conceptual tricks that everyone knows Trent has up his sleeve. The Frail was great, but when I was gasping for air on the RER after the show I realized I had longed for more similar songs.

At the end of the day - it was well worth the trip to Paris. It's the best performance I have seen in ages. It was inspiring and enriching, but secretly I wasn't completely satisfied - mostly because I got the feeling the band wasn't themselves. Let's see how they do it Sunday in Nijmegen. Can hardly wait.
And before I forget - what's with everybody taking pictures with their cell phones and digital cameras during entire concerts - there are more arms stretched out sporting cameras to get that one shot, than hands rockin out to these great grooves.

Get real.

Yep ! 25 tracks. Exactly the same setlist as Mexico, apart from the fact that in Paris 'No you don't' was played before 'Suck'. So one of the longest set so far :)
Having seen NIN in 1999 at the same place, I have to say that I do agree with what Iblis said about the cohesion of the band. RF was far away better IMHO than Aaron North. Okay AN runs very fast on the stage and he also makes a lot of funny things with his guitar, but he does not play it that much in the end.
When getting off the Zénith (which could also be callen the cauldron), I had mixed feelings about the show. All in all the band was more than okay (Jeordie's bass lines on the heavy tracks, Jerome played his drums like clockwork and Trent... well Trent !), the lights was really nice too, most if not all the songs were brilliantly played (Reptile sounded like a steamroller), but... I don't know... It was very mechanical -and perfect, of course, but still mechanical-, and it's clear now that it is TR & his band, not a rock band with its leader...
A great gig anyway, but not exceptional...

What fucking show did you guys see? Ridiculous comments.
the list of songs is ok. for the order i don't know exactly, but one thing's for sure : they played Dead Souls right after No you don't : my two favorites songs of the show, can't be wrong about that !

Were you there? I thought that the show was awesome, although, I think that Trent was throwing a temper tantrum because the crowd wasn't singing along correctly to March of the Pigs, put the microphone into the area inside of the barricade and then ran to the back. I think he wanted to throw it at the crowd, but since it was taped or whatever, he couldn't. It seemed really intense, but somehow surreal.

Did you attend the show, robotmonkey?

Yeah, I was there. Flew in from Texas.

Brilliant show, far too warm though. I had to keep filling up my water bottle and pouring it over my head, i was soaked and boiling and was only at the back of the standing area.
Managed to blag my way backstage after, the band were gone but said hi to the Dresden Dolls and got some free melon so it was pretty cool.
Much better gig than London, 30th March, longer set and more songs from the Fragile. Dead Souls was great. Well worth the €700 i paid to get to paris and stay for 4 days.

What did you all think of the lighting?
I too thought it was a great concert. Flew down from Copenhagen to AMS and then drove from there to Paris to see the show.

I was lucky that the average person height in France is a somewhat lower than that in the Netherlands so I had a very good view of the stage and performance ;)

As for the Dresden Dolls, IMHO, I didn't really like them but it was good as background music for drinking beer outside ;).

I thought that it was nice and somewhat sedated, in comparison with past tours. I thought that the whole show blew Austin and Houston away, but that may be because I actually got to get right in the middle of it all and really let it all wash over me. It was a great trip and a really great show and worth everything that it took to get there. Oh, and I think that I was the only girl there wearing pearls. I don't know why I think that that is funny.
Master of the Ninth Arch
this concert was fantastic......only i don't understand why there was no air-conditioning.......it was fucking hot....great show really....i don't understand any petty bitching about the performance.....where else are you going to find such real intensity if not at one of these concerts?

anyways, i was particularly glad to finally hear 'dead souls' live........and 'sin' still is one of the best songs done live.

i'm in barcelona now waiting for wednesday's show....

There is a brief article (in French) with some quotes from a phone interview in the Paris daily Liberation, as a preview to this concert. Doesn't say anything new, but here is a link. Now I know how to say "those fucking cornfields" [of Pennsylvania] en francais. Super !
