yay, i just came home and am completly exhausted.. the show was grreeaaat! the played wonderfully -- a good mixture between the heavy stuff and the slow songs. listening to "something i can never have" like this was an absolutely unique experience. and i thought the show was over after "hurt", but then they kicked our asses again. yayyy! i also saw Trent shaking his little Tamburine, and in the end there were fireworks, lol.
seriously, great show. tomorrow i'll write more, but now i shall fall into sopor.

I wan't a set list easy to memorize. The set list in Fragility tour had some kind of story line, continuity or something. Yesterday's set list was like abruptly changing from one thing to another, then to another. Sometimes I felt strange.

Anyway, the band was great! Trent was awesome!! Oh, they played Burn!!! I was in the left block, so could not see Aaron or Alessandro much.

It's like I was dreaming last night. I wish I could see their show in the US again. The yesterdy's show was not as intimate as the ones I saw in Madison and George five years ago.

I felt the same way as mikeko san. It was like I was
dreaming. I had been waiting for NIN to come back to Japan
for 5 years.I missed their show here in 2000 so the last
night was my first NIN live experience.

It was worth enduring Deep Purple and Slipknot shows
played before NIN.(I went into the arena section about 4pm.)
I seriously thought I was gonna die during Slipknot where
people were going nuts.But I kept telling my self "Next is
Trent the guy you've been dying to see for years.Be tough!"
By the time Slipknot finished I was soaking wet with someone
else's sweat(yuk!) and my hair was like a bird's nest.
For a 36-year-old woman, i think i should be proud of myself
for surviving that craziness.(I had to energize myself with
a power drink after this though)

Anyway, just before 8pm NIN appear on the stage and they
started the show with Pinion with Trent calling out "Let's go!"
And my adrenaline level went high.

I was in Right block(btw,this is a baseball stadium) and
after the 3rd song I managed to grab the fence at the very
front, and I could see everyone expect Jerome.
They were all wearing black.Aaron had this red bandanna or hanky
hanging from his back of his jeans pocket.
He was playing like crazy! He looked much cuter than I expected with
that semi-long black hair.
Jordie was on the Left block side so I couldnt see him well,
but he was really rocking too.
About Alessandro, I had imagined he would be playing very quietly like
without moving his body much. But he was actually really getting down.

And of course, Mr.Reznor.I was stunned to see him with that
new haircut but it has nothing to do with his performance.
He was amazing! I cannot express in words how great the show
was. Trent seemed to be a little surprised to see how
affectionately we welcomed him(them).
I mean, he must know how well the new album has been
selling in Japan and all, but the last night's show,the place
was packed (arena+seats) and everyone was so excited and
singing along every single song they played.

!!!!!! Trent was back to Tokyo !!!!!

Trent was so gentle and warm to Japanese fans, too.
He does not talk much(almost nothing) at the stage, but he smiled (as a child !) when the fans song loudly, �gdon�ft you, don�ft you, don�ft you�c..�h during Starfxxkers Inc.
I suppose he knows most Japanese does not understand exactly what he says at the stage, and his saying �gThank you�h is so deep and sincere.

Every fan sang �ghurt�h together in U.S.A., but Japanese fans heard his every words and listened to the key one by one. (Unfortunately, I could not remember his only message with keyboard �cjust before �ghurt�h?!)

The half moon appear just over the stage.
Every moment is our big memory for summer 2005.

By the way, Jodie looks very enjoying and playing hard�c. It�fs better than San Francisco and Coachella where I�fve been to (even harder than at APC in Tokyo ?!?!). He also played keyboard.

They don�ft move away much from their standing at the center (at Coachella as well).

Here's my account of Summersonic 05 in Tokyo with NIN Headlining:

My friend and I took the train from the Yokosuka Military Base (about a two hour trip) and arrived just in time to see Interpol. I had seen them before, and they were playing a lot of material from their new record. So, we decided to check out M.I.A. The kids were really into their performance, but it's just not for me. Next, we saw MEW, a band Radiohead and Elbow fans should check out. They were hypnotic and played with intensity. They also had some great videos playing behind them during their performance. They closed with Comfortable Sounds. It was fucking brillant. Next, we were "killing time" before NIN with Echo and the Bunnymen. They played some classic tunes including Lips Like Sugar, the Killing Moon, The Cutter, and Bring on the Dancing Horses. The lead singer's narcissism was cranked up as he intorduced the Killing Moon as the greatest song ever. After their performance, we jumped into a cab and headed over to the Chiba Marine Stadium to watch Slipknot and get positioned for NIN. The crowd was really into Slipknot, but I thought they were terrible. They're like a poorman's GWAR meets the WWF, and the lead singer can't sing worth a shit. The crowd started filling up (about 30,000-50,000), and after about 45 min, the lights turned down (a line white Tokyo moon shined above the stadium) and Pinion started. The crowd swelled with anticipation. Then BANG, they kicked right into Wish. My adrenaline was pumping and the crowd was rocking (at least for a Japanese crowd.) Right away, I noticed Trent sporting a new hair cut. With his new muscular build, my friend thought he looked a little like Henry Rollins. They sounded fantastic. (I've seen them two times before, and this was definitley the best I've heard them sound. Both previous shows were in New Orleans for the Downward Spiral Tour and the Fragile Tour.) Anyway, the set continued with Sin, March of the Pigs, Line Begins to Blur, Something I Can Never Have (really great,) the Hand That Feeds, TerribleLie, Burn, Closer with the Only Time mixed in for fun, With Teeth (this was much better live than on the record. Is it me or should the slower piano part of this song be much louder on the record? They got it right in concert.) The Frail, the Wretched, Getting Smaller (the crowd got into this one, but it's not my favorite.) Gave Up, Suck (Best performance of this song I've ever seen) Hurt came next, and the whole place was in the palm of Trent's hand ( he is a Star, fucker. I'm so glad to see him back at the top of his game. I'm glad his personal demons have been exercised, so he can do what he does best...make some of the best music around. Then, You Know What You Are (another song that was much stronger live than on the record. The crowd was pulsating. Then, Star Fuckers (the crowd erupted into laughs and applause when you could see Trent smiling on the Jumbo Tron just before the don't you, don't you part.) They closed the set with their classic single, Head Like a Hole.
As I said before, the band was phenomenol. The guitarist was completely manic, Jeordie was having fun too, the drummer was right on and beat the shit out of the skins. The keyboardist was good too. I particularly liked the Atari Joystick work on Burn. As I said before, Trent is performing at the top of his game. He added a few lyrics and F bombs to a few songs but not a lot of interaction between the crowd. Nevertheless, he IS a Star, Fucker.
Besides the long trip to and from Yokosuka, my only regret is that the set list hardly changes. Trent has such a great back catalog that it's a shame he doesn't add a little variety. I would have loved to hear a few songs that I hadn't seen performed before including "And All That Could Have Been" (I'll bet $100 he never plays it live), "the Fragile", "Home", "Reptile", "That's What I Get", "Right Where it Belongs."
I hope you guys in the U.S. get a little more variety, but if you get this exact show, your minds will explode.

I meant to say, Trent looked like Henry Rollins. I must be more sleep deprived than I thought.

Great gig, the crowd was slightly dull for a NIN show thou... i thought they were going to finish with Hurt too, then BANG, they played two of their most vulgar songs there after!

Oasis kicked ass too, i highly recommend you check them out... it's different, but they still got balls despite not being REALLY heavy....the songs are great and the crowd was AMAZING (better than NIN's actually)

I was at the show, too. I got in the stadium when Deep Purple started "Smoke on the Water." (I totally agree with epauli about Slipknot, by the way.)

The NIN show was really amazing. I've seen them live only once, when they came to Tokyo in January 2000 (their first ever tour in Japan), so I really can't say this is the best or something, but anyway I had never expected I would have this experience at Summer Sonic 2005.

Trent's smile came when the crowd didn't stop singing "don't you, don't you..." in Starfuckers Inc., not before the "don't you" part. Actually it seemed to last for ever - more than twenty "don't you"s, I think. The crowd started laughing, not knowing where to stop themselves, as if "nothing can stop me now". Then, Trent went like, "All right..." and made that big smile. That is, he lost his chance to yell the f-word in the song, though I can't remember exactly if he managed to say the word because I was one of the "don't you"ers.

This was one of the most beautiful moments in my life I've had at a concert.

I'm so glad that so many of the audience in Tokyo was singing along. It was a festival and so I hadn't expected that many people had listened to NIN albums before. You might think there wasn't as big an interaction as in the English-speaking countries, though. I think f-words are not so shocking (or amusing) to us because it's a foreign word, and that everybody knows the f-words aren't such a big deal, especially with NIN.

The whole show was recorded by MTV Japan, and will be aired in a few weeks. It's worth checking out.

Too bad you felt that way because people around me weren't for sure. They, including me, were all going crazy!
I always wanted to sing NIN songs really loud and throw myself into them, but I can't do that at home.

And so that night, I sang along every song except HURT
and I felt great.

I had been away from going to any concerts for over 10 years because I thought i was too old for that
or rather I thought i should feel that way. Stupid,eh? Also my passion for music had faded, or rather
forced myself not to get into it too much anymore
because i thought i didn't have enough time to enjoy it.

But i was wrong.That night,I enjoyed NIN more than anything.I even went there alone
(well i was with my sister but we split because she wanted to see Echo and the Bunnymen and Duran Duran)
which I had never done before but I loved it. And seeing all the other bands made me realize the power of music.
I know it sounds corny but that's how i felt.

Anyway, that NIN show became one of the most beautiful and memorable shows I had ever seen.
(my top 10 list include My Bloody Valentine and E.Neubauten in 91)

BTW, I saw TV ON THE RADIO at this festival whom Trent mentioned that he likes somewhere.
They WERE really good.I recommend you to check them out.

i totally loved the concert...
i had to kick some teenage butts during the slipknot concert but its ok, everything was great, the setlist was great, the stage design was also cool, even the weather was great hahaha, it was not that hot after all...
I also went to the arena about 4 pm, after catching the interpol and mew concerts,..
So i was there when deep purple was finishing their concert.
Well you were there and you know that the slipknot concert was crazy, like always...ive been to 3 of their concerts (this one, one on the beautiful monsters tour with manson and misfits, and one on the rock in rio Portugal), and Corey, the vocalist vocalist knows how to take control of the audience...
Got kicked and kicked several butts, had a bottle of water trown at me, pushed a guy and he slipped, anyway, common stuff on a slipknot concert....
Finally, their concert was over.

At this point, i almost had a nervous breakdown, i´ve been waiting a long time for this concert, and i knew it was going to be good,but it was far from good, it was %#%(*¨$%`amazing.
when the intro started i was paralyzed...
It was pinion, and i was glad, cause i love that song...
So like a message to the slipknot fans still on the crowd they started the concert with wish, like saying, hey fuckers, we know how to make noise, and our noise also has some pretty fuc¨%$#¨emotion....
The whole concert was amazing.
It was better than the tokyo bay concert in 2000.
On that concert i felt like i was the only one who knew the songs...all the other ppl around me didnt really knew the band, i remember this 2 girls, one of them saying:
Ohh he can play classic piano, during the frail...

SO it was good to see all those ppl wearing NIN t-shirts, and singing along with me....

So, yes. indeed, i absolutely loved the concert....

I agree with you totally! Oasis were really good, I was dragged to see them by my girlfriend. I knew some of their songs through her, but I didnt know alot of them... I'm checking them out for sure now, the crowd was really cool when they played, evryone was just having a euphoric time...

BUT, I am a NIN fan At heart, so I feel Trent put on a way better show... but it's like compairing apples and oranges....

Here's my translation (so many cliches that I just translated roughly).

The moment Trent Reznor appear on the big screen, a roar comes out from the audience. This guy singing Wish, whose voice is unmistakably Trent Reznor's, now has a totally different look - well, I've heard that he had got his MTB and he had successfully built himself up, but I hadn't expected this ripped Trent Reznor... and his new haircut.

Not only the visuals but also the performance is strong. Not only Trent but also all the guy on the stage, especially Aaron, the guitarist. He's as if controlling a chainsaw he can barely take control of, provocatively.

The performance is really overwhelming. The climax comes with Starfuckers Inc. When the band fall silent for a moment after the "don't you, don't you", the audience starts shouting the "don't you" part. It becomes so massive that TR gives a big smile. He goes "All right", and shouts "DON'T YOU!".

I've never seen NIN like this: they're doing this call and response thing. Neither have I ever seen TR smiling!

The show ended with a thrown-and-broken guitar and fireworks in the summer sky. This could be legendary.

i wasn't at this show, but i went ahead and captured the video clip of "wish" that was just mentioned on the hot line.

MTV Japan just aired an interview with Trent taken before the show. He was very nice and cheerful, joking that he was dissapointed because NIN's and Duran Duran's shows were ovelapping, and he used to be a big Duran Duran fan. "When I was in an elevator, then John Taylor came in, and we looked eacher other, and knew it was gonna be a show down tonight (laughing)."

He also said that NIN would be touring for another year , and this fall tour (kicking off today!) would be more "arty".

It was a short interview (followed by Liam Gallagher saying "Alwayd wear condom"), but it was still nice.
