The trip was amazing...
Here's an account (this is quite long - and I apologize...):
I flew into Vegas Friday with my Mother, who randomly decided she would come along for the trip, so she could roam Vegas by herself. My Mom is pretty cool and likes to party (I think my alcoholism comes from her), so it was awesome that she was coming along for the ride. Plus, she was paying for my way as a Christmas present this year and she wanted to be part of it.
I checked into Planet Hollywood and was immediately greeted with the NIN LITS Concert poster which was on the wall opposite of the entrance of the Hotel, across the street. To say the least, I was as giddy as a fucking school girl.
I spent the rest of the day walking around the Strip with my best friend, Liz, playing beer pong at the Rock House, hanging out with cowboys in Vegas for the Rodeo Convention, buying absurdly awkward sunglasses and guitars filled with alcohol, taking pictures with Chippendale's who pretended to choke us in the photo, and being filmed in a
Motorcycle Vegas Street Chase.
Friday night, Liz and I went to Haufbrahaus to meet up with the NINners for dinner - I got to meet some pretty cool people. I was quite drunk still and wasn't sure of what was going on - so I didn't get to meet as many people as I would have wanted to. It was Elphaba's birthday, so she got to be sung to, which was cool. Papagolash, who I sat next to most of the time, was paddled. I met No44, Ninpolite, and some other really nice people as well.
Before clubbing, Liz and I went back to the hotel room because she insisted on refreshing her makeup. I was fine with it, so I also put some more makeup on. Somewhere along the progress, Liz dropped her liquid cover up and it splashed all across my pants. To say the least, Liz and I spent the next half hour trying to splash water, wipe off, and blow dry my pant leg.
Later, we all went to Krave (which I now realize was a Gay Bar) for Nine Inch Night... There were several screens lining the wall and all of them were playing AATCHB, which was pretty awesome. I bought a couple drinks for people and sat to watch people dancing. Whoever was stomping and possessed spiky hair - I admire your dance moves....
Liz and I decided to peace out, and check out Britney Spear's party at Tryst which we were given MVP tickets to (for the kids, of course - it's fucking Britney Spears!), so we went back to the hotel to change shoes (since her boots were giving her blisters and I didn't want to hear her bitching).
Due to a supreme amount of tiredness (I never really did have time to work on the sleep debt I had acquired from finals week the day before) and intoxication, when I laid down to relax while she changed shoes, I passed out. This was all by 12... Yeah - I'm lame.
I ended up waking at 6 the next morning with a pounding headache. I couldn't go back to sleep because of that awful spinning feeling that is acquired with a hangover and the trepidation I felt for the possibility of vomiting. So I bought internet and logged onto ETS - go figure.
My friend didn't wake till 11... when I finally grew restless and jumped on her. She made fun of me endlessly because of my elegant departure from consciousness the night before - which was well received because I was, quite frankly, embarrassed that I had passed out so early.
First, we ventured through the mall next to Planet Hollywood. My friend was instantly drawn to this Rock Clothes Shop (Vegas Design... or something), where they had tons of Rock type clothing that she drooled over (and if you saw her and the way she dressed, you would understand completely). The designer of the shop fawned over Liz and asked to take a picture with her, later giving her a $100 discount on boots, a hat, and a diamond leopard watch. Liz was in heaven. I just stared at my phone and gaped at a text picture that Papagolash had sent me of his bruised ass - after the paddling he had received at Haufbrahaus. Thanks a lot, Papa. I really appreciated it.
We walked further into the mall and came across a novelty shop. I wanted to find a fro wig to emulate the awesomeness of the JMJ fro, so we walked in. Instead, I ended up swiping a pair of sweet bright yellow shimmery star sunglasses. As I prepared to leave the shop, I caught eyes with Rob Sheridan who was walking down the mall pathway with a friend. I didn't really want to bother him, so I walked by and roamed the rest of the mall.
After eating at the Hawaiian Tropic Zone with free drink tickets, and buying a bowl of Tiki Punch at Trader Viks, we ventured down the Strip to the Rock House to refill our beer guitars with Pina Coladas. The street was windy as fuck... and I felt like I was walking against a solid cold barrier most of the way there. Half way to the bar, my Mom called me and informed me that the venue had released more pit tickets. We hurriedly filled our guitars, jetted back in a cab, and circled the hotel to find out about swapping tickets. In the lounge, I inquired about the tickets at the front desk while Liz was preoccupied with a bright green dot on the ground. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was a guitar pick and grabbed for it. Lo and behold, it was a mother fucking NIN pick and I just about shit my pants. After a while and after shitting my pants, we found out that we were supposed to buy and switch these tickets at the venue booth, so we headed over there just in time to find out that they were gone. I was sad that I missed out on a chance to be so close, but I was still ecstatic about having found a NIN pick so randomly. Also, at the booth - I met up with some more NIN.com-ers/ETS'ers, including a guy who walked right up to me for an introduction, shook my hand saying "Hi Torgo!" and admitted that he saw me drunk and stumbling across the street the night before, which he had Twitter about later. Wat?
Afterwards, we walked around randomly in the casino, gambling and drinking straight from our beer guitars. Walking to one of the machines, I walked past Josh Freese - but was too flummoxed to say hi. Plus, I hadn't gotten over the fact that I didn't want to seem like a rabid fan, attacking and being extremely awkward. I could kick myself now for not at least saying hello... After that, I saw Brett walk past to the main lobby. How did I know it was Brett, you may ask? One word: beanie.
Before the show, I went over to the venue to see the line. I recognized some people from Haufbrahaus and chatted, then I decided to film some people in line with my camera for the Fan DVD extras. I interviewed some interesting people and some people seem to recognize me (I have no clue as to why or how?) and approached me about the making of the DVD, which was pretty cool. One woman with a furry cat hat gave me $20 and told me to buy drinks, which I tried to refuse - however, she absolutely insisted that I take the money (thank you if you are reading this! - I did end up buying a couple rather nice drinks!). Someone also gave me a red Survivalism flag with the AIR flag to wave during the concert (I think it was Riot?). I also loved seeing that Cody (No44) had coated himself entirely in cornstarch. Fuck yeah.
While interviewing, I came across a guy who was pretty funny and ended up daring me to wear a Hannah Montana shirt to the NIN concert. He said if I was willing to do so, he would buy it for me, so I complied. I mean, why not? And Hannah Montana is way better than Trent, anyway. I changed my shirt hiding underneath a clothes rack since the store didn't have a changing room, and struggled to fit in the child size shirt. To say the least, it was tight and very bright pink, with Hannah Montana splashed across the front and the words "Secret Star" sparkling below her face. Hot.
In between interviews, I also received a fro wig from Papagolash, which was awesome (kudos!). I proceeded to wear the fro, the Hannah Montana shirt, and sick star stunner glasses as I approached people for more interviews. I think I lost more potential footage for the DVD that way... Inspired, Liz also partook in the action by demanding to buy some hairspray to make a Robin Hawk out of her hair...
Anyways, I eventually got in line and waited for it to wind it's way awkwardly around the bar in the center of the area in front a long corridor of shops and a bar at the center of the hall in front of the venue. Liz and I got to the front and were told that our studded belts would be confiscated. Bummer. Slightly miffed, we went to our hotel rooms and stashed the goods. Then I crotched my camera and proceeded back to the line.
Security was ridiculously laxed. They didn't pat us down and when the lady checked my bag, I barely zipped it open and she goes "ok - you can go", shooing me away with a uninterested flick of the wrist. I got really excited by this prospect that security really didn't care... maybe overly so, while overlooking the fact that security could be different inside...
Inside, I immediately beelined to the merchandise booths. After reading about people missing out on merch because of shit selling out fast, I knew I had to get in fast. I maneuvered my way in to the side of the line/mob and muscled my way to the front. While waiting in line, I noticed a guy with white contacts and spiked hair. Umm... cool? I continued to move toward the desk and finally caught the attention of one of the workers. I asked for a medium track jacket and was informed that I was getting the last one. I was super fucking lucky...
Liz and I walked into the venue and found our seats. We were in section 207 row B, so it was an ok view. At this point and time, I was still kicking myself for not getting the pit tickets that were released earlier and was still killing myself when I later envisioned myself catching Alessandro's keyboard, but who was I to bitch when this concert was going to be fucking amazing - no matter what.
After a bit of a wait, the guy who had bought my Hannah Montana shirt came by. He had, apparently, also bought the Hannah Montana shirt and was looking for me to take a picture, which was hilarious.
Ten more minutes later and The Bug came on. I'm sorry Trent... I really admire you as a person and love your music, but what the fuck were you thinking? Sure, I think I could have enjoyed the music maybe if I could just hear the DJ scratch some tracks out, but the whole "Reggae chick" thing was just out of control. Her voice layered over the dissonance of the tech music was just... too much. At most points during the performance, Liz had to excuse herself to buy more alcohol. I couldn't blame her. I'd also like to point out that I asked for her to bring me back some as well to help soothe the pain... And when the lead singer began shouting "Encore", writhing on the ground, I couldn't help but think "hell fucking no".
It finally ended after a very long time of sidelong stares with Liz. In time, NIN finally appeared - and I don't think I could really grasp that it was real. My first fucking concert and my first time seeing NIN. This wasn't happening...
During the whole show, I felt like a loon rocking out - slamming my head, mouthing the words, pumping my fist to the beat having never done it before/feeling silly doing it, although I couldn't quite help it. It was really really fun and I couldn't help but wonder what I had been missing out my whole life by missing the whole atmosphere of concerts (fucking collegiate/club soccer and its commitments).
I was absolutely thrown by the dazzling lights and the amount of tech work involved in the set design. Closer and Only were some of my favorite effects and I felt like I was in some mad dream.
During the performance, I tried to tape some stuff on my camera and had no trouble with security. Eventually, the battery ran out and I couldn't find my bag with the extra battery (which I fervently tried to search for in the dark with my cell phone as a light during the concert). However, I couldn't find it till after the performance, several chairs down from me. How it got there, I will never know (perhaps, it was my crazy dance moves?).
Also, I received several texts during the show and I was absolutely shocked to get several texts from ETS about Alessandro's myspace post and his imminent departure from NIN. It was devastating... to say the least. I also got some texts from the NIN Fan DVD Camera Crew, drawing some concerns about being caught by security, which had me riled.
Regardless, I was entirely enthralled by the show. JMJ and Robin ripped the mother fucking stage apart. Josh Fucking Freese completely hammered his drum set and his arms seemed to be flying everywhere. Trent was awesome and extremely energetic. I told myself I wouldn't cry, but I fucking cried like a baby during 'Hurt' and at the end of 'In this Twilight'. Liz kept poking me in the ribs and laughing, and I punched her and told her she was a bitch. The end of 'In this Twilight' was especially emotional because of all the departures and knowing that it was, indeed, two of the band members' final goodbyes. Josh ended his set by throwing his sticks backwards with a flare of finality and I almost died when Alessandro unplugged and lobbed his keyboard into the crowd (in which he just kind of chucked it barely offstage in a small effort to launch it). And when Trent left, I was in tears. As the lights came up, I had to hide behind the collar of my new 1,000,000 jacket so that Liz wouldn't have more ammunition against me.
Afterwards, we struggled to leave the venue as everyone pushed toward the exit. I looked back and saw some people still sitting, almost in reverence. Everyone looked emotionally drained and I couldn't blame them. I felt it too.
We left the venue, finally, and arrived at the awkwardly located Halo bar in front of the venue. Some ETSer's and NIN.com-er's were there, so I mingled and met with people from the "camera crew" to see how filming went. I finally met Chaonatic who told me really good news about filming everything, except parts of Piggy. Some other camera people approached and told me that they either filmed some parts, were caught or couldn't, or filmed a majority of it, which was somewhat somewhat nice.
I fucked around with Papa, Kobob, Alyze, NINpolite, etc. - met Hippygeek, Eris, Magtig, Xvostya, ad infinitum, and LEA - and later decided to follow a bunch of people to Bally's to hang out in a hotel room and drink (after being indecisive for forty minutes). Liz left to meet up with some UFC film editing friends who were hanging out with UFC fighters. When I got to the hotel, sleepiness hit me and I couldn't seem to hold my eyes open. I also managed to say the weirdest shit (and I was sober!) and couldn't carry a normal conversation (apologies to everyone who endured...) Example: "So Torgo - what are you like when you drink?" - me: "Well... I... uhh... I get big. WHAT? I WHAT?" I swear... I'm not this weird - and I certainly don't get BIG when I drink.
So... I left. Yeah - I'm a huge pussy. But I just couldn't seem to stay awake so I thought, what's the point? Plus, I didn't want to aid ETS/nin.com with any possible blackmail material that could have ensued if I had eventually ended up passing out on the floor...
I fell asleep at 4. And I was abruptly woken up by a drunk Liz at 5, who smashed into the room and proceeded to smack me across the face, slurring, "what the fuck are you doing?! - You can't sleep again! - You're in Vegas - Why don't you answer your fucking phone?!". I grumbled and attempted to tell her that I was tired, but she persisted on talking, offhandedly commenting that she had just come back from hanging out with Robin in the Heart Bar. I was slightly worried at the idea of a drunken Liz badgering Robin, and trying to tell him that she was trying to copy his hair do. Apparently, she had offered him a drink, and his lady friend a drink, but he graciously declined. Apparently, he was a good sport.
Awake and disgruntled, I finally couldn't do anything but give into the whims of Liz. She dragged me downstairs to go eat at the Coffee House at 6 AM, where she was quite angry at the idea of only being allowed to order breakfast. She really wanted a hamburger.
I order a breakfast sampler and she got chocolate chip pancakes - offhandedly announcing every now and then that she was intoxicated. I would simply just nod and shove another piece of egg in my mouth.
At one point, a guy came and sat at our table. Liz and I were slightly put off by his presence, but were relieved when we realized that he was not some crazed individual, but a NIN fan who wanted to talk about the show. I mentioned the Fan DVD and he confessed that he had some stuff for the show, so I traded info with him, which was cool. Eventually, his wife came and collected him, dragging him away by mentioning that he had just missed Josh Freese, who was also eating in the cafe right next to them.
I continued to eat, and at some points - Liz began to comment that she didn't want to vomit. I immediately told her to drink some water and threatened to chop off her pinky if she were to actually follow through. Instead, she started eating some food off my plate, mumbling about some guys that she had hooked up with while she was gone.
Liz and I went to bed finally and she seemed to make it just fine without really vomiting (which I am all too thankful for). We woke up the next morning at 12 by a phone call from my mother who informed us that we had an hour to check out of the room. Liz, who admitted to still being intoxicated, frantically attempted to find out about her flight - about which she had no clue about... not even what time her plane was taking off. I spent the time showering and trying to pack, squeezing in my beer guitar in my suitcase (which was no easy feat).
My Mom, Liz and I packed into the elevator - and discussed Liz's bedraggled appearance. The elevator descended a few floors and eventually a woman came in with a young girl, dancing with a stick. The young girl pressed a button by accident and we stopped, inadvertently, on several more floors. The lady apologized, but we just laughed and said it was no big deal. Who was I kidding? - I would probably do that for fun at my present age.
We got off the elevator at the Lobby and left. I looked over outside eventually and spotted Robin who was leaning against the front doors. I also noticed JMJ and Leo, who was then approached by the lady who was in the elevator with us, which I later realized was his wife and his daughter. Having already kicked myself for not saying hi before, I put aside my fear of being an absolute ass, and approached them.
I opened the door and tentatively addressed Robin. He looked tired and I immediately felt bad for approaching them. Feeling like an annoying prick but already having put myself in the situation, I proceeded to shake his hand and tell him he had an amazing performance the night before. And since Liz was sort of hovering by me, I mentioned that he had met her last night. Robin sort of looked at me and Liz blankly, and I laughed, commenting that Liz was pretty hammered the night before and he sort of nodded in recognition of who she was. I then proceeded to ask him for a picture and he said he would. I then shouted out at Justin, shaking his hand, introducing myself, telling him he had a wonderful performance and asking for his picture. Justin also looked quite tired, but he smiled and was really nice. They placed me in the center and I gave Liz my camera. The
picture was taken and I said thanks to them both again, wishing them a safe flight home. They both were really friendly and thanked me again.
It was a great end to a great weekend. I can't say I could have had it any other way.
