YES YES YES YES AMAZING!!! so many of my favorites that i have a chance of seeing. thank you Dr. Tran!
HURT! as much as it has been played over the years, the TO show will be my first show, it'll be really amazing to finally see it (been dreaming of it for years)
The Big Comedown, i so hope he was doing "MMMM-BUH!". how was Survivalism and The Beginning of the End? lots of tambourine dances? and the wretched! fingers are crossed it's played in Toronto.
I have so many questions and want to hear so many details. can't wait till everyone gets back with reviews!

The visuals on it are insane.

I'll talk about the stage.

In the back is a wall of rotating lights. 7 squares of 4x4 lights. This thing goes up and down.
Behind it is a large video screen.

There's also 2 video cages. A front cage that curves and a rear cage that curves so they make like an oval.
They both go up and down.
Between the cages were these dangling lights.

I think it was on good soldier, Trent tries to sing and play tamborine and play xylophone at the same time. He said afterward he apologized for not practicing and having a silly look on his face.

as discobunny quoted trent saying, "before a tour we reherse a whole bunch of different stuff..some of it makes it...some does not. " maybe you'll see some of the tracks you're hoping for. It has got to be really difficult to make up a set list with such a vast amount of material, but i think he does a great job of balancing things out.

edit: on the same topic, i was going through all the tracks the other day picking out what i was hoping to see, but unfortunatley a 3 hour show isn't going to happen ;) haha

Brigid: Thanks for texting me/the PM! I didn't get it in time though... because I was out dead from lack of sleep from the last few nights (hunting and obsessively refreshing Google Earth was exhausting) and by this morning, I had given up on locations that I could not reach in time. But seriously - thanks for the help!

And the set list: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. I would have died. I have never seen them live and I think that if I were present for 'Hurt' or 'The Frail' - I would have cried. Literally. I don't think I would have been able to hold back.

Also - the set design sounds unreal. Did it have any connection with the pieces moving and changing the sound of the instruments, like Trent had once said in an interview?

EDIT: I am sort of sad to hear they didn't do 'Lights in the Sky'. Hopefully they add it to the list, so I can watch it in a live taping on youtube... or something. (My life is sad...)

The stage.

Highlights:

Section A had minimal light stuff.
Discipline was a bit of a disappointment. Guitar didn't sound right and Justin's vocals made me laugh.

Section B was the good stuff
Warning and great destroyer was everyone minus Freese in front of the front cage
When the cage came up for the ghosts stuff, Freese was in the middle.
Finck to his right with a flute, Justin with a big stand up bass to his left. Trent off to the right with a large xylophone, Alessandro to the far left.
Visuals on the Ghosts stuff were utterly amazing. Rain effects and lots of stuff I cant describe or remember properly.
Ukelele on Piggy
Greater Good had an effect that reminded me of that new Radiohead video.

Section C was very intense lighting.
Roadie came out and cleaned the screen with a flashlight before Pinion
Big Come Down had those dangling lights inside both cages.
Survivalism had video screens in the back. Top left had a crowd cam.
Only has a new intro.

Section D
Think of the beginning of the reheasal video for echoplex. Then think a lot bigger, or think of wheel of fortune.

I am in such sensory overload!!!!! the light show made me dizzy at times...i cannot believe the detail in this show. I will post more later when I get home..hey does anyone have an extra litho? Keyboard on top of another keyboard in front. Another thing on the side to his left and a cable switchboard to the rear.

The re-work of Piggy was fucking brilliant! The stand up bass was rad and I was so happy that not all the old songs were the same. No more Piggy fan interaction though since he was behind a video wall...

so first thanks to Trent for letting us be a part of this, it was really cool to experience this! especially since i'm missing the Toronto date and the LA date by like 4 days.

thanks to drtran for giving one of his ticket since i was stuck at home with no car when the 25 ? popped out and i probably missed the reseda ticket by like 2minutes

i want my job to be taking pictures every night with this crazy light show. soo jealous of Rob haha

about the show:

- i got sooo stoked when i saw the xylophone since this meant ghosts songs! i'd love to see a show with songs only from that album

- favorite songs were probably:
echoplex (that's when josh was "playing" on the screen right? looked awesome)
the frail (no one yelling anything, it was amazing)
head like a hole
the ghosts songs
hurt (loud drums!)
piggy (unexpected!)


was hoping for: (but wasnt played)
eraser
were in this together

not so sure about:
survivalism? i actually do like the song but for some reason i thought it was weird live

- light show was crazy as usual.

- loved the one that the lights faded away when someone got closer to the screen

- loved when josh "played" on the screen it was cute haha

- there's a part that reminded me joy division (the blue wavy thing)

- not so sure about the one that we could see in the bathroom or whatever

and yea i wish i had the opportunity to take pictures, i hate not having pictures of shows i go too.

i'm not used to concert (i usually go to smaller punk shows) and it blew my mind that someone was getting paid to replace trent's mic stand haha


i pointed out the "negative" thing just for the sake of a review, but i honestly loved every minute of it!
and now i cant wait to see videos later in the tour so i can see the lights in full effect

I posted most of this in the other thread, but I guess it should go here.

Amazing show. I'm pretty dead right now but it was awesome. Over 2 hours long! I couldn't believe all of the visual mechanics that they had to pull off. There were so many screens, lights, and extras used throughout. During the Ghosts part, Josh Freese had a drum set-up that included a frying pan and a large Arrowhead water thing. TR's xylophones were funny; he had a large one for the Ghosts section and a small one for The Good Soldier. TR was as energetic as I've ever seen, Robin was great, Josh and Alessandro were obviously great, and Justin didn't add very much for me but the silhouette of his afro with his cello and the desert background was hilarious. A lot of unexpected and very cool elements

SO AMAZING.... but descriptions don't do it justice, especially for the visuals. Definitely the longest setlist I've ever experienced and the nicest pit I've ever been in!

FWIW, there was no obscene screaming or lighters thrown during Hurt. Robin on acoustic guitar... Josh was thunderous on drums and no Trent on keyboards. I'm glad Hurt was changed up a bit [as far as I could recall, maybe this isn't new to some of you?].

Also, have we ever seen Trent on a xylophone/vibraphone? I couldn't believe what i was seeing - my head is still spinning. And it's in a good way. The evolution of this band is fantastic and very admirable.

i must say that being able to listen to the songs live without ANYONE talking was amazing. Really gave me the chance to sit back and soak in the tunes......im so glad i was given the chance to see this show

It was great to hear absolute silence during song like Hurt and Ghost 1, etc. It added a lot, imo.

Stunning.

I still cant believe we saw material form Ghosts. 8 Ghosts I was played after Survivalism, I'm positive.

The lighting was phenomenal, I've never seen anything like it. It was an interactive light show. During the Greater Good, you could see the visage of Trents face in the screen of lights as he was singing. I dont know how to describe it- It's like the light screen had some kind of sound sensor.

Visually, this is going to be the best tour yet. If the band isn't playing in your hometown, I suggest you sell all of your worldly possessions and do whatever is necessary to get your ass to the show.

I too am sooooo tired of Hurt, but this was great and new. It was fantastic. I love the mix of acoustic guitar and Josh's pounding drums.

I'm not a huge fan of TGG on YZ, but this was absolutely amazing with the graphics. It's hard to describe, but it was like a live 3d spectrograph. So artistic and just amazing. It was like a live art installation at times. Incredible. The lighting and graphics were leaps and bounds ahead of previous tours, imo. If your seats are sort of far back, that's not a bad thing for this tour.

Thank you Thank You Thank You for such an amazing set Trent & Co!
It was a pleasure to see how comfortable they were as a band. Sure they had moments---like Trent Tambourine Silly Face---but for this being the first full time through no stopping as Trent said---wow.

This is unlike any NIN show you have ever seen. The lights are mindnumbingly spectacular. At each possible moment I thought--this is the craziest thing I have ever seen---and then it got crazier. The cloud rain thing during ghosts with the Xylophone madness... And the hanging lights during the Big Come Down? Holy Crap. I have never seen anything like this.

I hope this is studied---this is museum quality light work---and I thought the Bill Viola stuff was killer.


I fully agree that this is a band maturing and evolving in coolest way possible. Thanks guys for an unforgettable show! :-)

Oh---and Trent had more wardrobe changes than Cher...but it was all Rock and Roll. ;-) The reason the setlist was broken up the way it was had to do with set changes---which for what they did in such a short amount of time was nothing short of miraculous.

TIMP---totally agree about being able to hear the songs without gabbing...at certain points durings Ghosts, you could hear a pin drop in there.

It was really great to see everyone at the show---I had fun chatting in line---I think I was getting sunstroke though---at least that's my excuse for being a silly giddy mess. Ha Ha!

the survivalism graphics were awesome b/c it was like the video - 8 camera squares positioned around the venue [even the bathroom!]. i loved that!

I may have the placement wrong, but Im positive 8 Ghosts I was played.

Glad to hear material from The Fragile. During the Big Come Down the Justin, Trent and Robin were separated by swinging lights. They lit up with the beat. That was really cool.

Edit- we should fix the set list yes? I hope we didnt miss anything other than Terrible Lie...

So glad to have been there. I don't have much to add that anyone else hasn't said before. The stage setup was the most amazing and interactive set up NIN has ever done. And I nearly had a heart attack when they played the Great Destroyer.

The Greater Good's bacteria-looking video along with a visage of Trent's big mug through it was impressive.

Only had some great interaction with the LED screen, which I can't wait to see again in September.

And those mild-looking LED light boxes in the back created some extremely bright and trippy visuals I was not expecting.

And, shit... a 30 song setlist? Not something that happens at many shows. Just... awesome.

Thank you Trent, Robin, Josh, Justin, and Alessandro.

PS. Your hick security guy with the scruffy beard was a complete asshole to many people at the show. He took my friends 2006 With Teeth pass (from the first "under the rock" envelope) that we were planning on getting signed, thinking we were bullshitting him about our intentions. All we were doing was standing by the barricade with a sharpie. He almost took my OSR phone too because he thought I was recording the show.

Oh the hell that would've been raised if he took my OSR phone.

As for the setlist, I entered everything down on my cell phone. So here in the correct and full set list, except for the Ghosts tracks.. I don't know which one is which so someone else will have to fill those in.:

i over heard the guy who, im guessing, worked for the band say that no passes were being used for this show. He held up his green wrist band and said that those are for band members/roadies and those are the only ones that would work in getting you into the venue. It sucks that your pass got taken away from you.....i would have raised hell!

Denver, SLC, Oakland and Inglewood. Next Inglewood will be seated- I'd like to see the show you know? The visuals will be great when you can take it all in I bet. Barricade is always the best, but I like to observe the show at least once every go round. Besides, the line is going to be a total clusterfuck and I don't know if I will have the patience to deal with it this time around. Shit got way out of hand last time around. EDIT- COME ON DUDE I WOULDN'T MISS RED ROCKS. No fucking way.

WERD. That guy was a total asshole. I went back to the rail after the show and one of the techs was about to give me the setlist and he made me freaking leave, despite the fact that even the guy was telling him it was ok and told me "he'd remove me" if I didn't leave on my own. Such a bastard.

Most of the band was there.

This was THE most incredible NIN show I've ever seen. I know people just say that, but it's truly leaps and bounds beyond ANYTHING he's done live.

Everyone should see this show if they can.

As modul8tr said, it was for friends/family it seemed. That was Danny Lohner there right? I liked him on the Self Destruct Tour. A few people didn't have the wristbands, but i think they were still friends/family.

I totally loved the new take on Piggy ala ghosts style. Robin has a mini guitar of some sort that sounded like a Mandolin, does anyone know what its called?

I dont know about anyone else but i LOVE the fact that Robin is back in the band, his range of musical instraments is so wide and it adds a touch to the band that i feel has been missing for the last two tours. Im not sure of the order of Ghosts tracks that were played, but i do know that Ghosts 24 and 31 were badass live.

I was there Thursday night and 2 other people were there with me @ Grace Ave. Modul8tr was there too. I wanted to jump the wall @ Grace Ave., but the cops caught us. They didn't like the maglight in my jacket pocket, and were somewhat amused when I told them what this was all about. They just told me to scram, and followed my car for a few blocks.

I think modul8tr got there really early in the following morning [~5AM?]. I don't think he found them though. I returned in the morning too [~8:30AM] and found nothing except a lot of landscapers giving me weird looks.

I was a couple of people over from the girl who got "The Ugliest Hat In the World" aka the last ?

At one point Rob walked by and said "is that the hat?" (She was wearing it) She nodded and he was laughing...

...One thing that just popped into my head was regarding some of the other radio contest winners...I know I met a couple from out of town (hardcore fans)---and another girl that won in LA that was a hardcore fan...but I wonder what (if there were any) the people who won that didn't know much of NIN thought of all of this...

I mean---as people have mentioned from their run ins with joe law...how do you begin to explain all of this to someone who only knows HLAH or Closer? (or nothing at all)

The treasure hunt was so amazingly fun and creative! I can't wait to see what they do next!

I am loving the fact that Robin is back as well---I'm not going to talk smack against Aaron---I think that it's an Apples/Oranges situation. Robin has a confidence that he brings to the material that you can feel immediately. It was really great seeing all of the members playing so many different instruments---and the fact that they moved even Josh around was impressive.

Was it a Ukelele (I KNOW I so spelled that wrong...) during Piggy? Or am I thinking of one of the Ghost tracks? The new arrangement was great---kind of switched up the context a bit. Although I will miss the grab the mic from Trent sing a longs... (especially when people fuck it up!)

I'm assuming the tickets were not in a precarious or dangerous place because none of the others were. Still, I'd like to know if they were attached to a gravestone or something.

So this is totally bugging me. There was a Greek fellow and his sister next to me- nice pair. Pictures were taken. Video was recorded. I know he visits ETS, damn lurker! Anyway- please post your goods or contact me! I would love to see what you got! We had the best spots in the house so some of those pictures have got to be good!

I was stumbling over my own words trying to tell them why I was there and about to jump the wall. At first they didn't understand how we could know the exact location, but then we explained about GoogleEarth/GPS and the scavenger hunt. They said that concert tickets weren't worth getting arrested [worse] for.

I actually pondered that last statement for a moment... and then left.

she loved the show! i know because we didn't stop talking about it for hours after it was over. she said it was the best concert she'd ever been to. she was super bummed when she thought she couldn't go to the show. the guy she was with is also a good friend of mine who's traveled thousands of miles to see nin.

it's funny [and cool] how differently everyone reacts physically at a concert. i tend to go nuts and enjoy it much more when everybody's jumping around. some people like to take it all in without moving instead. it's all good...

It was an amazing show. Me and my girlfriend got tickets from Jeremy, drum tech. It was the greatest concert I've ever been to.

I was in the front, next to the insane guy who kept throwing his fist in the air. That guy was more animated then Trent, it was kinda hilarious.

The black wrist band let us hang out with the band in the bar after the show. I hung out for a bit with my girlfriend. Robin Finck came in and talked to some of us. Cortini was there too, I missed out on meeting him, unfortunately. Didn't see trent though. :/

But it was pretty cool.

Oh, and I think I saw you, synodic, if you're avatar is your pic. You were sitting next to me in the bar. Anyways, amazing concert. Great stuff.

I think the opening two songs should have been different. I would love to have started on 'Beginning of the end' or something...
Also, Survivalism wasn't perfect - Though this song had a cool stage set up, I thought the song was less than incredible live. Just my opinion.
I LOVED Head Down, but I also love the guitar during the main chorus on the album, which was absent during the live performance. I like it either way.

I appreciated the mix of the loud and the subtle from the songs they played. I wish I was one the lucky ones to have found the tickets, but I had the luck of being invited by someone that did find the question marks and had such a great time. I can't wait for them to come back in September since I'll be able to see the stage from the seats. Still can't believe I saw them in such close view!

I'm seeing a lot of confusion about the set list (especially which Ghosts tracks were played), and there hasn't been a completely correct posted set list yet (no, 8 Ghosts I was NOT FUCKING PLAYED... it was 31 Ghosts IV). I jotted down the set list on my iphone while the songs were being played, so I'm absolutely, 100% positive this was the set list.

my fading memories: the first one is definite. i think i've got one song too many though. maybe they combined a couple songs after that?

i think they played 6 ghosts because i remember trent playing a prominent part on the marimba and robin playing the melody on the wooden recorder. 19 ghosts because josh played the trash drums with trent backing on marimba. 25 ghosts because josh and trent went back and forth on percussion with robin on the watery wooden rocks [?] and alessandro on electronic weirdness. 31 ghosts because robin went crazy on the guitar but i think the parts were a bit different from the album.

anybody have a recording? i'd love to get the setlist straight.

Hola Bitches, yeah I was at the forum on 7-19-08 getting some sweet nine inch nails lovin', who wants to touch me?
I scored some tickets and the whole week was like freakin' Christmas morning. I was the psycho in the crowd dancing with a crazy grin on my face. I just couldn't believe I was there and Trent was only 10 ft away.

So we walked in and Trent was already talking to the crowd, saying that some songs/ things would either make the cut or not for the tour, then some random comment about how he was gonna throw up backstage. (Obviously a joke, and he was probably nervous)

They did their set and then an encore, and between songs Trent would chat with us a bit. He wanted to know who got the Google Earth tickets at the cemetary. Then commented that he thought he might be arrested for that location. "Since were all friends now" Trent explained that it was really "fucking difficult" to sing and play tamborine at the same time, and needed to practice, that was the reason he had a "stupid" look on his face.

Other little things,(a funny moment you would not see unless you were up close) during The Warning Trent was DJing up front and people in the front row were trying to get his attention. So he waved at them and flipped them off.

For afters I went to the meet and greet and relaxed a bit. Josh, Robin and Alessandro were there. I was so damn anxious and nervous I couldn't talk to anyone, and my mouth turned into the freakin' Sahara desert. I was hoping that I could possibly meet Trent, but he was a no show. So now Im sad. On the way out climbing the stairs I was face to face with Alessandro and gazed into his soulful beautiful eyes, and I just kept walking like an idiot! Im sure I had stupid look on my face.

It was great fun, I had a blast and Im still riding the high 2 days later. I also met some nice NIN fans, Suzy and Pete, Cheers guys!

BTW---it was very nice meeting you at the show.

Yesterday I was thinking about the show...and I was thinking about how so many instruments were used in an entirely different context than normal (a freaking Ukelele???) and it made me happy. All Arrowhead bottles should be so lucky as to play an integral roll in the artistic process.

...And again--this is not your SD NIN...it's evolved. Some posted in random NIN comments "well it comes down to what you prefer: Prolific Trent or Meticulous Trent..." FUCKING BULLSHIT! The two are not mutually exclusive. Stop living in 1994. You can be amazing in two different decades---or three or four---you have to change and grow. Otherwise, you are a 90's nostalgia band playing the Canyon Club on a Tuesday night.

That is exactly what happened. His mic-tech was directly in front of him on the floor and he was making hand gestures at him throughout that song, as well as others when he needed whatever-it-is-that-a-mic-tech-does from the guy. He didn't flip anyone off... And believe me, I was right there and also had my eyes on him the whole time. ;)

I am so with you on this mod! This is one of my favorite songs on YZ. I am so suprised this song hasn;t made it into the mainstream more---not like MTV mainstream...thinking person's mainstream. If I had a talk radio show I would be using this as a bump all the damn time....Also I think this song has so many facets---that its just begging to be used cinematically (documentary, film or otherwise).

I was so happy to hear it live---and to hear it stand so well on its own---that it got special treatment the way some of the more major pieces always get.

THe Greater Good and Pinion were not listed on their set list, and The Frail/The Wretched were meshed together...
