Do not post if you weren't at tonight's show
They played The Downward Spiral in its entirety.
Bricklayer
Amazing show tonight. They played TDS completely and the show ended with HLAH (no encore). The venue was hot as shit but it was a lot of fun seeing the show with a bunch of other hardcore NIN fans.

I really hope the audio of this show is leaked by someone in the NIN camp.
Grand Pontiff
That was so ridiculously amazing! So loud. No encore which was confusing but hands down one of my favorite shows.

Holy fucking shit.

Holy crap. My arm hurts BAD. You know, because I taped the entire show -part of TDS (the song not the album, had to replace batteries). Checking out how it all looks and sounds. Will have it ready for you all as soon as possible.

But HOLY SHIT what a show. That blew my mind. I still have this stupid grin on my face because it was THAT good.

Edit: Need a decent audio source. The video one is far below what it should be.

A Warm Place

I had a shitty location for this song, but I know it's what everyone looking is looking for.
Knight of the Royal Axe
After Hurt, I was done. Great show is an understatement! Exhausted. Time to drive home. Wow...
TDS all the way through, then:

1,000,000
Terrible Lie
Metal
Lights in the Sky
Burn
Gave Up
Suck
Physical
Hand That Feeds
Head Like a Hole

(maybe a lil out of order)

Maybe a little out of order. Crazy hot in the venue, oh my God. But TDS all the way through for the first and last time, according to Trent. Saw a few songs for the first time (Physical, Lights in the Sky, Big Man With a Gun and Warm Place). The band was obviously extremely hot, but they kicked it as hard as possible. I'm guessing this is why there was no encore.
Master of the Ninth Arch
fucking epic, will post vids of piggy, ruiner, big man with a gun, and eraser asap.
Master of the Ninth Arch
That was fucking unbelievable.

In between songs, I kept holding my breath, thinking, "He's gonna break from the album now. There's no way I'm this lucky."

Still in awe. Truly unforgettable.
Master ad Vitam
rail. robin jumping on me. all of the downward spiral. worth queuing since 9pm the night before (with a slight break for sleeping).

thanks to all on line, friends, foes, and all!
Master ad Vitam
Holy Shit! I can't believe they played A Warm Place live! Once they played Ruiner, I figured they were going all the way. One thing that tipped me off though was they didn't to the 3rd part of March of the Pigs like they always do, so it was like the album version. As TR said, this is the first time they've played the album through, and the last time. I do hope they bust out A Warm Place for some of the other shows, as it was really something, it would be a shame for it to be played at only one show. I still can't comprehend what happened tonight, after they played Hurt, they could have played anything and it still would have been the best show I've ever seen. More later!

Edit: I was right in front of FOH, and I saw the lighting guy pull out a setlist after HLAH. It was only three songs long, the first two being The Frail and The Wretched, didn't see the last one. So I guess they had a potential encore planned, since it was on a separate list.
Master Traveler
wow awesome show....tdws whole cd...nuts...cant wait for both terminal 5 shows!!!!

big man with a gun....gave up and burn where def my fav. parts.

was there from 4-1130....

Bricklayer
Managed to get 7 people into the show that didn't have tix because of being way too in top of twitter, didn't get tix myself until the wed release, got one of the last 3 venue specific shirts and i'm still in shock that TDS was played from start to finish.
What a fucking amazing potential last show to see. I was speechless at most points during the night
Master of the Ninth Arch
ok...it almost seems silly for me to post "Wow....that was incredible".......

any individual who is a big enough NIN fan to end up reading THIS thread.........

can fully comprehend the GRAVITY of what just took place.

THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL LIVE.......every single song in order.

all i can come up with to say is.....

I am ETERNALLY GRATEFUL that i was able to be there to witness this.

Trent and the boys REALLY outdid themselves with THIS ONE!!
Master of the Ninth Arch
This show was fucking epic. I was up on the balcony with my camera and an ultrwide so i got some good shots of crowd+stage, and the venue. I will upload them when i get back to milwaukee

Theres not much more I can say thats already been said, but damn. I am so glad i was able t make it to this show.

oh, and... Anyone interested in trading a XXL Bowery shirt for my extra XXL Webster hall shirt?

I ache so much - in a good way. Fantastic pit night. Bruised as hell, but had a blast - the video itsjustdave took for me (THANKS) of Big Man With A Gun is uploading in HD now - youtube tells me it'll be up in about an hour, so check my account in about 90 minutes from now (to allow for processing time).

edit - upload screwed up - trying again. This should keep you busy though.
Master of the Ninth Arch
Amazing show.

stood...for..soo...long...

have to say it again....TDS LIVE OH MAN
Master of the Ninth Arch
Just got home a little while ago and I think I'm still in a bit of shock. Got to the venue or should I say joined the ticket/wristband pickup line on 12th St at around 4:45ish, already sweating from the sun and humidity. The line moved although it was a little slow understandably. Went up the stairs from the pic from which I could see the line to go in, which probably also stretched over 12th St by that point. My friend and I got our nifty wristbands and tickets and then went over to the Village Pour House across the street for a few beers, which was def. overtaken by NIN fans which was cool. After that we hung out across the street from the line as it moved inside and we enjoyed the cooling rain and some last few cigs. Then we joined the line and went inside (didn't have to show my ID again oddly) and I headed straight for the merch booth and after a slightly long wait I bought the New York City poster, the full final tour dates poster, and an XXL Webster Hall event tee. So glad I did because they were sold out not too long after. Anyway I rubberbanded my posters and shouldered my shirt and headed up to the floor. It was, as expected, packed tight and hot. The Horrors were (thankfully) already playing and they were pretty good, but their singer bothers me for some reason. Anyway after a long, hot wait and at least 10 mins. after 8:45 the lights went out to the opening sounds of Mr. Self Destruct and the place went nuts. I didn't fully grasp what was happening at first. I was a bit thrown off by Closer and then when they went right into Ruiner I had to pinch myself to make sure I was really hearing that song and then only after that wonderful surprise I put 2 and 2 together and realized they were doing/could be doing TDS entirely. This show will definitely go down in history and could very well be the best NIN show I've ever seen. I can't freakin wait for Tuesday at Terminal 5 and I am actually looking for a ticket to Wednesday's show, I have a spare for Tuesday to trade (or sell at face separately to a fan in need) or I will pay face for it (PM me anyone interested!). Anyway, I went in expecting to see an long ass crazy set of somewhat differing stuff to what was played at Bowery (which I didn't attend but read about) and I ended up seeing TDS entirely, including seeing Ruiner, Big Man With A Gun, and obviously A Warm Place for the first time. I left out of need for fresh air a few mins. after HLAH. I figured they weren't coming back out after a few mins of the house music playing even though no one was leaving, and I'm glad I didn't miss anything by leaving. Plus I had ample time to catch the last express bus home which I probably would have missed had there been an encore, and avoided adding an extra hour or more to my travel time home (ferry & 2 trains<1 bus w/ comfy seats). All in all a great night and it was only 1 out of 3 for me, maybe 4 if I can get a Wed. T5 ticket.

This was a good show.
Master Traveler
absolutely amazing! i can't believe nin played the downward spiral from start to finish! first time they ever played a warm place. 15 years since they'd played big man with a gun. lights in the sky was awesome, too.

dream setlist.

on our way to the show, we read the nin twitter saying "cool setlist." i remember a similar comment made before one of the 2 times they previously played the first part of tds live in 2007. i told my brother i thought they'd start tonight's show with at least 7 out of 8 of the first songs from the downward spiral. it was even better... they played the whole thing!

nin trivia: on 2/15/07 at the riviera in madrid, nin played the first 7 songs off tds in a row after pinion. they played 10 tds songs. robin finck was in the audience.

about 3 weeks later, on 3/10/07 at brixton academy in london, they played 6 of the first 7 songs off tds (no ruiner) after pinion. 9 tds songs.

tonight's webster hall show was a dream come true. so glad i was able to be there. thanks nin!
Bricklayer
Truly wonderful show. Amazingly got tickets that were released last week after being shut out when they first went on sale. Have seen NIN 9 times now and while each show has been incredible, given that this was by far the smallest venue I've seen them in, it had a totally different intensity. It was so thrilling to hear TDS from beginning to end and the intensity continued in the rest of the set which included songs I've heard before but it was such a different set from any of the other concerts I've attended, that it was clear this was for the most ardent fans. TR did not disappoint in making it very special - hard to do when all his shows are topnotch already. I've been to Webster many times and don't think I've ever seen so much equipment and so many lights on that stage. Nor has it ever been that warm in there - no idea who was to blame for that. On the other hand, every time I've been there was for a sold out show, but I've never seen it so crowded either. Was really happy to be up on the risers to the right of the stage, given my vertically challenged physique and my advanced age - am one of the really old fans - so had one of the best views in the house. Was happy to see that it was one of the wildest mosh pits at a NIN show. Heightening the experience was the fact that everyone sang along to every song and moved to every song - no equivocal attendees (like at Mohegan Sun for instance).
I really dislike Terminal 5 as a venue so my excitement for Wednesday's show is tempered by trepidation over bad sight lines. And certainly tonight had to be the piece de resistance as far as intimate NIN shows go.
Master of the Ninth Arch
I can't describe how grateful I am for being able to see this show. Having attended Bowery last night, I did not think Trent could top the intensity such a tiny, intimate venue offered.

Yeah, I was wrong.

When Mr. Self-Destruct opened with the album intro, I sarcastically thought, "Huh, maybe they'll play the whole album." And then came Piggy...and Heresy...and March of the Pigs (without the All the Pigs, All Lined Up ending)...

Everything from the album was insanely good. Ruiner was incredible and A Warm Place...wow. I've always wanted to go to a NIN show and see a never-before played song debut. My wish has been fulfilled by being able to see the first performance of one of my favorite NIN instrumentals ever.

The set after The Downward Spiral was also excellent, with Lights In The Sky, Metal and Physical being particularly awesome.

When I think about how incredible these two shows have been and realize that I have the two Terminal 5 shows to look forward to, I feel like the luckiest man alive.

Anyone bitching about the first setlist can officially shut the hell up now, too.
Master of the Ninth Arch
I'm simply reposting what I posted on the NIN.com message boards.
Words cannot sufficiently describe this setlist.
21 shows.
This set blew everyone one of them out of the water.
Every other show is now inconsequential.
On another note. It was great meeting some of the folks from here and some of the other message boards. Some cool kids floating around. Kudos to you guys.

Cheers.

FYI-vids on youtube by tomorrow.

another random note, i actually met nick zinner from the yeah yeah yeahs while waiting in line. he was walking by and taking a picture of the long ass line with his blackberry.

Tonight was epic. I am so thankful for a day off tommorrow haha

There are no needs for words on the setlist.

I got 2 of Trent's picks. I am happy.

See everyone Tuesday :D
Master Traveler
I can't believe I was at this show. I thought last night's show was going to be the one for the history books, but no, they managed to top themselves.

I don't even know what to say other than I feel ridiculously lucky to have been there. When they played A Warm Place, it really hit me that this probably is the end. Well, I can now say that I'm more at ease with that possibility, having seen the entirety of The Downward Spiral live. Holy shit.
Bricklayer
It's gonna take quite some time to wipe this stupid grin off my face. HOLY SHIT, that just happened!!!!! Was very happy to hear Mr. Self Destruct as opener, during Piggy I made some off comment to my friends about wouldn't it be cool if they just run through all of Downward Spiral, start to finish. THEN Heresy started, still happy but skeptical..... Once I heard Ilan start into March of the Pigs, I freakin' lost it; I knew we were in for one hell of a treat!
Absolutely the best NIN show I've ever seen by far. Quite possibly one of the best shows of all time for me.
Grand Pontiff
To Webster Hall: Air conditioning ~ you're doing it wrong. The steps were cool, the downstairs was very cool, the room with 1,500 people, not even close.

Maybe that's why they did it. Webster Hall: A Warm Place.

I just drove home to NEPA, so I'm barely functioning, but I had to check in here. Maybe to see if it really did happen, ha ha. More coherent thoughts later.
As everyone said, the shock of seeing TDS in its entirety was incredible. We all kept looking at each other and saying "Is he really going to do this tonight?" The answer was yes, and hearing the songs in order and in context really affected how they sounded. For example, hearing "Hurt" after the whole series of songs that precedes it gave it a very different feel. The band played it beautifully tonight and Trent was in good voice. As others have mentioned, it was really moving to hear the whole audience singing along--and in tune, I might add! Many have also mentioned how amazing some of the rarer live songs were, such as "A Warm Place", but I also thought they did a superb job on "I Do Not Want This" and many others that they play more often. Again, hearing the whole thing in order really affected how they were played and received. Trent did not jump around as much as he sometimes does. Some of that could be because the stage was smaller, but I think the band seemed really more focused on playing the music and trusting that the audience was there for that. The second half of the show had many highlights too. The performance of "Suck" was one of the best I've ever heard, "Burn" blew the roof off, and "Lights in the Sky" was gorgeous. The lack of an encore was strange, but everyone was pretty sated. My friends and I wondered why there was no encore--theories included "it was too hot in there", "the crowd being worn out and not cheering as much at the end", and my personal fave--some fool through a water bottle near the stage during HLAH, and we all know how much Trent likes that s---. But even with that, who could bitch? It was a stunning show, and to see the whole of TDS--well, it was an incredible evening and a great way to round out 20 years of seeing this band. (I first saw them warming up for Peter Murphy here that long ago!)
Master Traveler
I've been going to shows for the past 17 years of my life and this was far and away THE BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! The fact that tds was played from start to finish with no breaks was unreal. I have never seen ANY band play an entire album from the 1st song to the last song w/o stopping. I know that Pink Floyd did this for Dark Side of the Moon but that's all i know of. Any one else ever seen a band do this before? Anyway just got back to Boston and need the 2 hours of sleep that i will get before getting up for work.

I want to thank TR, the band and all of the fans who came out to this show tonight because it was one for the ages.
Troll
Im laying here replaying it all in my mind. wow. I'm stoned in disbelief i was witness to that, if you only knew the worrying, insane drama, & high levels of impossibility to seeing them Sunday night i was doomed with, you would be,too.

insane!!
I prayed so much for a ticket to this. This is how my day started, after still dealing with someone changing their mind on selling me his second ticket, which if it wasnt for me he would not have known they were on sale, I decided to chase after Leo at the first post of a ticket giveaway. I took the train assuming he would be in chinatown first , and after that he'd go to the Financial District/ North or South West.. So going over the bridge, i checked twitter. He was at Wall st & BWay, tickets were given away. My last best bet was to get off at West4 , therefore i'd be in the center with West Village, Webster Hall, and even Tribeca..so i waited for a new post. But there wasn't any, nothing was showing up so i fiddle-diddled with my devices at B&N for a short period of time. I was giving up, when i turn on twitter, which i had ignored since i exited the station, and read @nineinchnails' post regarding newly available WH tickets going on sale @ venue 6:30. It was 6:33!
I pack my stuff, changed into converse and dashed to Webster Hall.Thank God i've not been smoking! Made it to the line in time as the 6 or 7 person in what must have been 10 minutes top.

I will continue this tomorrow....
Master of the Ninth Arch
This was my 14th time seeing NIN and by far, I just had the best show of my life.

At first, I was a little bummed because certain assholes were saving spots for people from the bowery show the night before. (I'm looking at you and your cunt little friends, you 'miserable fuck' lying Lucas, so much for the balcony huh?) That goes to you to, head down shirt fuck. I mean if you're going to save spots, at least be honest about your intentions and have some respect for the people behind you.

As soon as the show started all that didn't even matter to me anymore.

I was right in front of Robin and had the best show of my fucking life.

And I fucking called it weeks ago, I knew that some way or another I was gonna get to hear "Big Man With A Gun" to say the least I went absolutely nuts.

During Reptile, I swear to you I saw the devil in Robin's eyes.
I have never, ever seen a more intense look in someone's eyes before. Fucking, fucking crucial.

See you next week, in LA.

Now sleep.

platinum0rgy, 1 down 3 more to go.
Master of the Ninth Arch
And yes this was a very good show. My friends and I had a great time. The set list was great. Toward the end of the show a lady came out with a case of water on the side I was standing on (right of the stage) and everyone got some much wanted water. It was so so so oppressively hot in there. Otherwise a brilliant evening.
Bricklayer
everyones said it. Amazing show. Flew in from Oklahoma for this and so glad I got these tix compared to the bowery show.

amazinnnnnnnnnnnnnnng

a warm place and big man were the highlights.

great night. Dan was cool as shit as were lindsey and christine.

great night and im off to oklahoma today. we got fucking spoiled....
Master of the Ninth Arch
16th NIN show I've been to and by far the most intense show. I was on the rail on Robin's side. The fuckin rail was bouncing during Heresy and 1000000!!!!!
Master Traveler
What can I say that hasn't already been said? The combination of the intimacy of the Bowery and the set list of this show was the one-two punch I needed to say goodbye to Nine Inch Nails.

I do want to give a big shout-out to the girl my group was standing next to in the balcony.

Blonde guy who got the tambourine the first night? Maybe gorny? It was your girlfriend. She made space for us so we could rotate our group of four in and out of one spot on the balcony, so each person got to see some of the show.

Thank you so much! Meant the world to us!
Master of the Ninth Arch
I can die happy.

When Heresy started I hoped but thought that was ridiculous...and I figured OK maybe 5 songs, after Closer I thought they'd switch...was texting a friend in LA and was just dying...

I was by the soundboard and they had the Big Comedown on the setlist but then it got crossed off.

I can't even put into words what this show means to me.

Got a litho and Rob Sheridan was over by me so I had him sign it, he was really, REALLY nice. Best show ever...epic. at the fucked up beginning of Suck Robin came sidestage, looked overheated and then recovered nicely to finish out. That's what it looked like anyway, not sure.

I do believe this show is going to be the one talked about the most.
Master Traveler
First off I wanted to say hi to the girl on the balcony wearing the CATS T-shirt. No reason, I just remember her.

now

The floor pulsing to the beat while 1500 glistening fanatics struggled to maintain their footing on the wooden floor slick with sweat. All of us wanting more despite having been abused, violated, and penetrated time and again.

To say this was the best show I have ever seen is a gross understatement. This was the most punishing, draining, intense, grueling, and satisfying experience of my life.

It was like S&M. It hurt so fucking good.
Master of the Ninth Arch
I will be at Chicago. Wouldn't it just be awesome to see the fragile played start to finish? I would personally love Year Zero down that way too, guess I am really daydreaming now. Awesome. I am truly happy for those of you who witnessed this.

So Christo, tell use again about Madrid?

Completely unreal, just completely, utterly unreal. I count myself incredibly lucky. And we all thought Bowery would be the best show. Complete stunner. It wasn't until Closer than I realized what was up (though I noticed them skipping the "All the Pigs" ending), but it wasn't until Big Man that I realized they were really going all the way to the end. And even then, they favored us with more choice selections. Incredible, incredible, incredible.

Who wants to place bets on the Fragile over two nights at T5 or Chicago? :)
this was a crazy show. my wife and i were standing right behind the sound guy. she looked over his shoulder and noticed the set list on his screen. when i saw the entire download spiral album from first song to last on the screen, and then about 12 more songs after that, i said this is going to be the best show i've ever seen in my life! and it was!

i've been a huge nin fan since 91 and i hate to admit this but this was the first show i've ever been too. every time they came to town, i was broke and couldnt get tix or was too late and the show was sold out. but this time i said fuck that. i dont care if my bills are piling up. i have to see them. this IS the last time! and i'm glad i did!

What can be said that already hasn't been said? Holy fucking shit. When the ETS guys were posting on twitter that it'll be an amazing setlist I said to my friend imagine if they played all of TDS. Then holy fucking shit. Once Piggy kicked in I thought "nooooo!!!" After each song I couldn't believe it. Once Ruiner played I knew it may actually happen, but was thinking they might cut short when A Warm Place came up, like they did in Europe. Wondered how they would play it, or if they'd play a recording. Started out as a recording, then I saw Ilan on the keys and knew, holy shit they're actually playing it. Robin was on the slide guitar, and couldn't see what Justin was doing.

Other notes:

Mr. Self Destruct had the album intro and outro, believe that was the 1st time that's been done.

Trents keyboard fucked up during The Only Time breakdown in Closer. Was playing a piano sound and went dead.

The Becoming was the still/album mashup they've been playing on the wave goodbye tour.

Trent was playing part of a sax for the 1st 2-3 minutes of Eraser. At 1st I thought it was a kazoo, but as the lighting got brighter you could see it was the top portion of I'm guessing an alto sax. Song really worked well with Trent on the keyboard. The whole band screaming KILL ME!

Trent was out of tune in the beginning of Lights in the sky. You know that video of them doing LITS for soundcheck and his voice it all high and out of tune and they re-start it? Yea that was the tone.

I don't think there was any a/c going on in the venue at all.

On about 2 hours of sleep if that, working on phones with no voice. Ready to do it again tomorrow and Wednesday.

Oh and, holy shit. hoLYUFCKIFNGDNTHEDOWNWARDSPIRALAHHHHHH!!!

Justin was playing the on standup bass with a bow. Funny, though, the first (and perhaps only?) time played, and Trent wasn't even on the stage. I guess that shows you how much he trusts this lineup. ("Gone, Still" was played like this during the Bowery show as well).

I figured it was intentionally omitted, since it isn't on the album.

justin wasn't playing the contrabass for 'a warm place'----> he broke out that bad bitch on 'lights in the sky.' for 'a warm place,' he added atmospherics via the little synth to his right.

speaking of that synth, i hadn't seen this stripped down lineup perform 'reptile' until last night... love the proper keyboard bits.

^^^^ my mistake, thanks for the correction.

Incidentally, I'm 93% sure that The Horrors played the same set as last night; the second song might have different.

And thankfully, they didn't have the killer bass this time.

we went to The Smith restaurant on 3rd and saw the horrors after the show.

We didn't approach them, they need their space...and I didn't really feel compelled to talk to them.

I don't know if any other show will ever top that. It was such an amazing show, and I am so grateful to have been there to see it.
Grand Pontiff
I think that if we knew then what we know now, that place would have come apart when Mr. Self Destruct started.

Obviously, there's nothing really to discuss when it comes to the setlist. It's funny, but once the realization set in, I actually thought of the people in the 'discuss the show as it's happening thread'. I figured everyone was going nuts.

I was by some very cool people. That definitely added to the experience. Granted, I was pretty far back, but I didn't see very many people filming. I hope we get something decent.

I really thought the fact that they had to hand out all 1,500 tickets was going to be a total disaster, but it went so smoothly, it was hard to believe.

In the weeks before the show I looked at pics of Webster Hall on their website & it looked like a pretty classy place. It's actually a shithole.

EDIT: I forgot that I wanted to mention that Trent really didn't talk much at all, but he said he 'wanted to do something special for this show & that they never did the whole album before & this would be the only time.'

On the drive home, it hit me that it felt like a gesture of putting it out there & that's it. He's really leaving it behind. As awful as that sounds, it kind of feels right. It's onward from here, I suppose.

I lucked out and got in with the last minute ticket sale. Checking up on twitter and missed the Bowery/Broadway find Leo hunt due to me taking a wrong train when I should have just ran like 15 blocks down. Got the twitter text with tickets on sale and couldnt believe they still had some around 7:30pm. Big thanks to whoever's idea of holding off last minute tickets to the end. Another fuck you to the scalpers. Ive been getting 300-500 dollar sale offers on the other forum. For those still trying to get tix for the other shows, there's still hope.

Got loaded up on the 5 dollar Becks at the bar downstairs and headed upstairs. The Horrors must have started early because they were already done. Did they sale any Webster specific shirts in merch? Cause the only ones I saw where wave goodbye and the posters. LITS had me teared up and I was surprised the crowd was quieter during this song than Hurt.
I thought the Amsterdam show was my favorite this tour but this one blew it out the water!!

On to terminal 5 bitches!!
Master of the Ninth Arch
^^^^ they had Webster Hall shirts, the design was just like the Bowery ones, except they were red.

He didn't say a word through the entire TDS section.

I already posted in both the Webster and Bowery threads on nin.com and don't feel like repeating too much. Suffice it to say: this was everything I could have hoped for. I saw the setlist ahead of time and went reading down the titles and when it hit me I gave a little squawky scream. Some people wanted to know what was on it, and some didn't, but I wouldn't tell anyone anyway.

I am not sure how any other show will meet, let alone top, this one. I can't believe I was one of the very few people in the entire world to see it live. Feel very very lucky.

Man, I would kill for a setlist from this show. Of course, they never seem to give them out... :(
Master of the Ninth Arch
It just occurred to me; that was the first time I didn't hear any heckling or obnoxious crowd banter during Hurt.

The only other thing I heard, besides the crowd singing along, was scattered "Thank you, Trent!"s throughout the audience.
Master of the Ninth Arch
I know, I wasn't there, but I have a question about the show. When they played Closer, did they do The Only Time interlude, or did they play the record version?

dloozer wrote:I know, I wasn't there, but I have a question about the show. When they played Closer, did they do The Only Time interlude, or did they play the record version?
No, they didn't do the "Only Time" breakdown. As already mentioned, they didn't play the "All the Pigs" ending to "March of the Pigs" either.

Yes, they did do the Only Time Breakdown. Trent's keyboard wasn't producing the right sound for him to play it right though. You can hear him play it with a grand piano sound coming out instead of the normal synth.

They did actually... and obviously the shorter version
Master of the Ninth Arch
Well, yes he went to the keyboard and starting a bit of something with some OT sounds, but he didn't play the full recognizable breakdown as in normal shows... maybe it was just a malfunction and he intended to, but at most, I'd say it was cut short.

Yes; the setlist said HLAH was the last song. I was kind of confused when they not only didn't bring the lights up, but JT didn't move or start to boot people from the front. But I knew that HLAH was the last song listed. No reference to an encore at all.

I was actually trying to get some water from JT after HLAH; I couldn't quite figure out what he was saying, but he clearly understood me but was shaking his head. In hindsight, the fact that they handed out water earlier on was a hint, as opposed to Bowery when they did it at the start of the encore.

It was an odd way to end it, though, like you said. They didn't bring up the house lights, but they did start playing music (but fairly quietly). People were razzing the folks who started to leave. Lots of techs swarming the stage; at first it looks like they might have been setting up for something, but when they started to take the drum kit apart... and then I saw the sound techs pulling cables out of the mixing board, that was a pretty good hint. You can do a song with a drum kit, but you'll have a hard time doing anything without the soundboard :P

Same here. I thought hmmm maybe... but when the cables started being pulled, I knew for sure there was no last-minute change to "yes let's do an encore."

Someone upstairs who has been to Webster a lot said they often don't turn the house lights all the way up after a show.

Well, I flew from nyc this morning, and i just got up for a very long nap..

Last night was unbelievable. It was probably the best show i have seen, One of them. And I have seen hundreds of shows..

I am still in utter shock they played TDS all the way through. I was literally fucking crying when I realized they were. I was in the 2nd or third row. And everyone around me was in utter disbelief that this was happening. I even joked around with my friend a couple weeks ago...."what if they played tds in its entirety?"...."that would be incredible"..."haha yeah it would, But you know it wont happen."

The fact that I witnessed NIN history, for its first time, makes this show special. If they do this in one of the other final shows, it will be less incredible, because they have already did it.
Trent said he was having fun...I was so pleased. Because I was too...The whole show I was screaming (and singing ) right back at him...And at various moments he noticed..

It was an incredible show. Im still in disbelief.

I wish i could go to more shows...but oh well...I made last night worth it, I enjoyed and appreciated every moment of it..

TDS section was incredible, obviously. I feel privileged to have witnessed it ...

But was anyone else a little sad about the complete lack of FRAGILE and YZ songs? (Esp. since they cut "The Big Comedown"---I was next to the soundboard.) I only had the $$ for one show, and was a little depressed that we got none of those albums ... and no encore ... Considering this was my last time seeing NIN, i was looking forward to something more all-encompassing.

i could see your point... but in a word... no

if they had decided to throw it in after Hurt i would have been fine... honestly...

its not that unusual for them to have no encore... just it looked like the stage guys were re-assembling for a sec there... not to mention that the house lights in Webster Hall are like the old gym lights that actually take about 15 minutes to warm up..... didnt really get that "get the fuck out" brightness going for a bit :)

I don't think there's much I can say that hasn't been said in regards to the awesomeness/gravity of the event...so instead I'll ask a question. (If this is too off topic, feel free to destroy it with your laser vision).

You know how before this whole tour cycle started, Trent was talking about how he was sick of doing the "5 guys on a stage" typical live set-up, and wanted to do something different?? Well, except for the obvious fact that there are now 4 dudes instead of 5, I didn't really notice anything particularly different about the way they were performing the songs, so much as the drastic change in song selection. BUT, when I started to pay more attention, I noticed that there are a lot more un-manned, "straight-from-the-record" samples being triggered on stage (the "wind noise" that dominates the opening of hurt, the choppy extra percussion on physical, a lot of background synth bleeps and blurts on various songs...maybe even the synth on ruiner???) that I don't think were there in previous tours. I don't mind it, if anything it's pretty cool when they can make the songs sound even closer to their studio versions, and it obviously helps fill the gap of being one man down...has anyone else noticed this?? Were they doing this all along, and I didn't notice until now?? Particularly with TDS, a lot of the songs (a fucking WARM PLACE?!!) have stuff thats essentially unrecreatable live.

Whatcha think?

Regarding the D50, how did he lose it? I'm almost thinking about bringing my D90 but the Aragon is pretty big and I'm not sure if I will get any good pics. My fastest lens is only 50mm. If I'm close enough to get good individual pics there is probably a good chance of getting the cam damaged. I'm now leaning toward just enjoying the show and leaving the cam at home, even though I'd love to get some sharp shots.

I cannot even describe how I felt and feel now about that show. Let's face it, we enjoy every show we go to, but this show felt like a shared moment. You could see it in the pit around Ruiner when the pit slowed down for a bit, as if everyone was thinking 'oh shit, he's playing through the album!'

I know, funny. The security guards were telling people we were on line for Hannah Montana.
Some kid in front of me...was telling everyone who asked "whos playing"..That it was the jonas brothers...I think thats where it started...

^^ I thought those security guys were great. Really good-natured. I've been to things where the people working are so damn ignorant and completely unhelpful. Constantly barking orders at people, "line up here, don't do this, don't do that". Maybe NIN fans are just that well-behaved, I don't know.

Some guy asked me what are you guys in line for?
To which I replied, "Michael Jackson", he said "oh, cool!"

I get to say I saw NIN at the Legendary Webster Hall show. That's all I really have to say from this point forward.

And I have that great red shirt to prove it to.

Besides Woodstock 94, this is the best NIN show of all time. I'm glad i got to share it with a fantastic crowd.

Soon as i got there and saw that red NIN shirt with Webster hall on the back i knew that sucker wasn't going to be there much longer.

Snapped it up real quick. I don't understand why a lot of people didn't decide to do that? They even had a coat check for people that wanted to take the shirt off or check the shirt they bought.

One guy was in line with me and then said "fuck it i'll get it after" I knew it wasn't going to last...

Best thing I noticed about this show (in stark contrast with the 5 big arena shows I've seen, especially in my Oakland hometown): when you're dealing with a tiny contingent of fucking hardcore NIN folks, everyone is really respectful and focused on the show. No catcalls during Hurt, no bro-types elbowing their way through the pit after 3 songs to deliver beers to their girlfriends just in time for them to go crazy during Closer ("Oh Em Gee I know this one!! I wanna fuck you with an animal!").

There were even little subdivisions in the pit -- after an hour of intensity in the front ten feet, I stepped back a little into an oasis of calm.

Also, almost every single damn person seemed to be able to sing every single word. Amazing. Simply could not have asked for a better crowd on any level (except for the douches that tried to line jump us and got shut down by everyone within 20 feet).

You guys rule! Thanks for my favorite NIN show ever.

I didn't expect all you kids to know who Billy Squier was - believe me you should be grateful that you were spared exposure to his music. The reason I thought it topical (I guess you missed it) was the posting by TR to the nin.com photoblog a few days ago referring to none other than Mr. Squier.

I'm so glad me and my friend got to go to this show, left completely drained of energy....

The people around us during the concert, it was a pleasure having you guys around specially to the guy who gave me ear plugs, those speakers were killer. Thanks to my friend Rob & his sister for buying the poster, glad to see you at the show.

Line drama as always, it's like going back to summer 2006. So much for 'honest' new yorkers, if anything some of you turned out to be lying worms.

Will probably post some pics soon, those speakers killed my camera.

I have several too, some with people in it; one or two with just the marquee, 12.3MP, uncropped. LMK if you want.

Moebius: thanks so much, I have only three up so far. No time, haven't even looked at Bowery photos yet. More will be up later/tonight/over the weekend.

You look happy, jaygregg! I wish I had been down there. I saw him turn backwards and just knew what he was going to do, thank god I had the camera looking over there anyway!

Now that all four shows are over, I'm finally posting my thoughts. Before this show, whenever someone asked me what my favorite NIN show was, I never had an answer. I liked different ones for different reasons. This show finally gave me a conclusive answer to that question. Seeing The Downward Spiral in its entirety will be hard to top.
Master Traveler
This show will forever rape and pillage every other show in the history of the world. I'm quitting concerts.

My posts from nin.com:

I may be in the minority, but I preferred this show to the Bowery. How long did it take people to realize they were doing The Downward Spiral in its entirety? I'm almost embarassed, haha. I flipped out over 'Ruiner' and I love how Trent pumped the microphone to beat of the song. IT WAS SUCH A GOOD SHOW! The setlist, the band, the energy of the crowd, the venue... it may go down as my favorite NIN show I've seen. Depends on tomorrow!
i liked when that guy screamed "1 2 3" during hurt....it was in perfect timing!
I personally liked how after Trent sang, "what have I become?" and this dude yelled, "MY GOD!" You just know a bunch of us were feeling the same way after the treat they gave us :-P

Yes but I kind of don't think I should post it. It had a lot of notes written on it. It seems wrong somehow to make it public. Maybe at some future time I will. Was that one perhaps given away to anyone? I haven't heard who got the setlists after the show and maybe nobody did. The one I saw was the one by Justin.

I put up another picture last night, and got them onto my site (vs. being on Flickr, where the compression makes everything look slightly shitty).

Personally, one of my favorite parts of any NIN record is the trio of Ruiner, Becoming, and I Do Not Want This in the middle of TDS. Seeing these 3 songs in a row, live, with the bass shaking my guts and the ungodly loud cacophony of unworldly noise that comes at the peak of IDNWT was THE defining moment for me of 15 years of NIN fandom. I just completed downloading the 21-Gig HD video file so I'll have to see how it came across on the video. Several people have commented on what their moment of finality was for seeing these last shows but the 10 minutes that encompassed those 3 songs was it for me. Just that ear-splitting, sense-obliterating, beautiful noise that only NIN can make. Thank you again, Trent.

it's funny, I thought Bowery would be the hot shirt to have, sort of wish I had picked up a Webster as well. Oh well :/

(They didn't take credit cards, and by the time I got back from the ATM they were sold out!)

This did set a new standard for me in concert experience. Prior to, it was a Tool show in Albany...

Now this is the benchmark.

Saddening in a way.

Maybe when you die you get to relive everything in your life for a moment. Wouldn't that be great.

Edit: Great shots Maryelle and everyone. Thanks for sharing and big thanks for the audio!

[as posted on nin.com]

While I posted before about how stupendous this show was, now that I’ve been to the 2nd Terminal 5 show, I need to reiterate that it wasn’t just an amazing show, it was one of the best shows I’ve attended in my 35 years or so of fairly steady concert going. I’ve heard a lot of wonderful music and enjoyed many great shows (9 of them other NIN shows) but every now and then, there is a show that is an category of its own where you know that it will be something you remember for a long time.

In 1979 I went to see a band called the Gang of 4 at a tiny club in Toronto called the Edge. They had just released or were about to release their first LP. Punk was relatively new. The anger, the rage, the fact of a mosh pit, the type of music, the lyrics, the attitude and the performance – all were unique at that time. I knew I was experiencing one of the most transformative gigs ever – not just for me but for the direction that music was going to take. I will never forget the expression on Andy Gill’s face, Jon King’s vocals, or the pogo thrashing/dancing in the pit. It didn’t hurt that Gill was a dead ringer for James Dean. I saw Gang of 4 again and at great shows, but nothing rivaled that show. At the opposite extreme, and as another example, I attended my first (and only) festival in 1980 in a parched and dusty field, and at one point Talking Heads came onto the stage with a whole new lineup including Nona Hendryx and Adrian Belew and played Remain in Light before anyone had heard it – and the crowd of 80,000 was silent because they wanted to hear every word and every note. And then there was last Sunday at Webster. Thanks to wise ticketing policies, everyone there was a true fan desperate to be there. And everything clicked – not automatically, but because it was clear all involved poured heart and energy and skill into it. And even the songs I’d heard and enjoyed before were crisper somehow and more passionate.
TR has asked how the paperless ticketing worked (I’ll limit myself here to how it worked in terms of the night of show, not as to obtaining tix) and I’ll say that it was great. I was extra grateful at the release of the few tickets last week as that’s how I got a ticket.

Thank you to the band for a truly memorable experience.

No, it's not that other TDS show that wasn't filmed. It was the first TDS show and the best because the band were in top form (no illness) and the crowd was fucking great, singing along and enjoying the show instead of being LA hipster douches.

I was there in all its glory. My (then) girlfriend and I drove up from atlanta in a one day-round trip (insanity!)

So glad to have gotten TDS.

I was there in the For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen WTF t-shirt.

I had a Palladium ticket from the first round of on-sales, and then caught this one days before the show when bowery and webster tickets were released. took said then girl up to NY for her birthday. what a fucking present.

And my own present came when I made it out to my other Wave Goodbye show, The Palladium. TDS redux =)
